  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

I noticed that there are quite a lot of anime these days that have “heroes” and “demon lords” as the focus of the story. These themes and settings appear to be popular with Japan. I’ve seen quite a few anime that involve heroes and demon lords such as Yusibu, The Devil is a Part-Timer and Maoyu. I thought that this show is going to similar so I didn’t really watch it straight away. Once I did, I was hooked.

Mio keeps reminding me of Rias Gremory from High School DxD. I know they’re completely different characters but I do think that their circumstances are similar. Mio is the demon lord whilst Rias is the younger sister of the current Demon King. Mio’s hair is red, Rias also has red hair. Mio has recently established a master-servant pact with Basara and Rias has sort of done that with Issei. Both of these anime have severely cheeky moments time, and it’s mostly involving Mio.

Maria was sneaky when she reversed the roles of the master-servant pact between Basara and Mio. I say sneaky but it could count as a clever plot, depending on how you look at it. From that point on Mio became Basara’s “slave” but because she didn’t kiss his hand she suddenly started to suffer from the “side effects”. Basara often has to make Mio “submit” by…well, calming her down. Or, if you look at it another way, he was satisfying her cravings. She probably wouldn’t have to go through this if Maria didn’t set up this pact by using her succubus powers. Still, it’s pretty entertaining to watch and it doesn’t happen all the time, just every now and again. =)

The master-servant pact is most unique, especially when it’s not done correctly. A tattoo of some sort of a heart with a line appears around the neck. It only appears whenever Mio is stressed and Basara must make her “submit” to calm her down and to make the tattoo disappear. Basara’s childhood friend, Yuki, didn’t want to be outdone, so she went through the exact same procedure as Mio. Talk about a healthy competition. Haha.

Moments and innuendoes but it also has a lot of exciting action. One of the fights took up an entire episode and that was good to watch.

I enjoy the fights. In my opinion the goodies, Basara and co, are strong but they always seem weak when they’re fighting their opponents. Whenever Basara squares off against Zolgia I always get the distinct impression that he will never come out on top. So, it seems like the goodies are always at a disadvantage but they manage to win either through luck or through sudden bursts of adrenaline.

I did have my suspicious about Maria from episode 8 onwards. I wasn’t sure if she was involved in some sort of blackmail or if she was acting as a double agent. It turns out that she was blackmailed into helping the enemy because her Mum was held captive. I’m glad she turned out to be part of the good side in the end. =)

I liked the ending of this show. It was rather unique. Basara left Zolgia to kill the ultimate enemy. I refer to him as the ultimate enemy as I forgot his name. Haha. I’ll probably remember once I’ve uploaded this blog. Haha. Anyway, I’m glad Zest didn’t die and I think she will probably be the next lady to undergo a master-servant pact with Basara in the next season. I think Kurumi will also undergo this master-servant pact next season. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.

I’m really looking forward to the next season, The Testament of Sister New Devil Burst. Right at the end Jin Toujou confronts the current Demon Lord. I’m a bit gutted we didn’t see that fight, I reckon it would have been really good. Judging by the post-credit pictures at the end it looks like Basara actually fights the Demon Lord. I like his green fringe as well. Does this mean that the Demon Lord actually beats Jin? Does he actually kill him? Eep, I dread to think. I’m also interested to see what role Chisato will play. I think she is the most mysterious character of the show because she appears be very wise yet very discreet.
What I liked most about this show is the bonds between Basara and his “family.” Basara, Mio and Maria show that you don’t have to be blood related to be siblings or to be family. Now, it looks like Yuki is part of Basara’s family too. That’s a nice touch to end the series. I wonder how long it will be until Zest comes back to Basara’s house?

  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

This show is very silly and daft, yet, I really, really enjoyed it. Haha.

If I were to describe the show’s theme, I would say that it’s the battle of the fetishes. Haha. However, the word “fetish” is never used; instead, the term is “attributes”. The main attribute that the enemy is after are girls who have pigtails, or rather, twintails. Twintails is the most powerful er… source of magic, in the whole world. The enemy who come out to attack each having individual fetish traits, or rather, attributes, that they specialise in. It’s rather tricky to explain, it’s one of those you have to watch yourself to understand.

The battles are fun to watch, I think they’re both cool and silly at the same time. I especially liked Soji’s first battle when he transformed into Tail Red. That long jumped that saw him crashing into that huge building was especially funny. He literally couldn’t control his own power when he transformed, and why would he? No one realistically should be able to adapt that quickly. Haha. The other twintail fighters are really good as well and they all have a nice contrast with each other. Tail Red has a sword and the element fire, Tail Blue has a lance and the element water and Tail Yellow has a gun and heavy armour and the element lightning.

I can’t really take the enemy seriously. I don’t think the enemy, Ultimaguil, are actually villainous, they’re just out for their own personal gain and desire. They’re often sent out to “steal” the twintail attributes but instead of doing their job they just do as they please.

I actually think the twintail warriors have their own “attributes” aside from twintails. Erina, aka Tail Yellow, is a secret masochist and gets aroused when Soji calls her name, haha. Aika, aka Tail Blue, although never acknowledged in the show I think she does display a lot of sadistic traits. When I think about it, she does literally throw punches when she is angry, and most of the time Twoearle is on the receiving end of it. I would say poor Twoearle but she does provoke Aika. I wouldn’t say she does this deliberately but I think it’s more about Twoearle not reading the situation. XD Soji, aka Tail Red, loves lips and girls. Liking lips and girls isn’t really an attribute but it certainly does any harm to Soji. =)

Comedy aside, there is one aspect of the show that I especially like. Normally in anime you will see the childhood friend or precious friend, with tsundere traits, beat up her love interest out of jealously or embarrassment. Aika is the childhood friend of Soji and she has a lot of sadistic traits, however, she has never beaten Soji up. That makes a nice change as I don’t really like to see girls hitting their love interests as I always think they’re unjustified.

I think Twoearle is supposed to be a bit of a mad scientist who is constantly aroused. Haha. Her backstory and battles with Ultimaguil is quite serious and you wouldn’t think it with her hyperactive personality. She keeps on getting herself into sticky situations where she will receive a brutal beating from Aika. I don’t think she means to provoke Aika is just that she doesn’t think before she speaks. It’s not a secret that she’s after Soji’s virginity so Aika is extra protective of him.

I still like Twoearle though. Even if she is mad, she has a good heart. I actually wonder if the name Twoearle is a pun of the word “twirl?” That’s how I keep hearing her name.

Lastly, I’m not sure how I feel about Erina’s head maid, Mikoto. She’s her head maid yet she’s trying to get men to fill in her marriage forms so she can get married. Haha. If she got married then wouldn’t that mean that she loses her position as Erina’s head maid? She must be desperate; she even tried to make Soji sign the marriage form. Haha.

  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

This is perhaps one of my favourite anime of all time, and it is certainly among the funniest I have seen. Sometimes I tend to forget how much I like this show but once I re-watch it, it brings it all back. I spent two days straight watching my DVD and my enthusiasm for it has rekindled. It reminded me why I liked it in the first place. =)

I think the more I watch it, the funnier I find it. I’ve been laughing none stop since Ayumu got hit by that truck. My heart was in my mouth when he dived in front of that lorry to save that cat. However, it then turned comical when he just casually turned his head to the camera and said “oh, by the way, I’m a Zombie.”

I think Ayumu is probably the best thing about this show. He’s very manly in his own right but he also has strong feminine traits, especially when he transforms into that…weird magical girl thing. I do feel sorry for him when the girls insult or accuse him of certain things. The best example was when Haruna accused him of invading her dream. As if he could do that. Haha. Well, since he’s a “magical girl” and a zombie, I don’t think the idea would be too far-fetched, but it seems like Dai-Sensei is the only one capable of that kind of magic.

This show is incredibly funny but it does have a lot of deep moments, at least from my point of view. Ayumu meets this Kyoko girl and it was then implied that Eu could actually be Ayumu’s killer. I was very conflicted with my thoughts. I found it hard to believe that Eu would kill him then bring him back to life. What purpose would that serve? On the other hand, there might be an ulterior motive for turning him into a zombie. Never, in my wildest dreams though, did I suspect that Kyoko would be the serial killer.

That was a really exciting battle, and I got more excited when Eu entered the fray and took on Kyoko by herself. The climax to that battle couldn’t have ended in a better way. I think it was good because to me it’s like Ayumu made her more like a “human” as she became corrupted when she took many lives for her own selfishness. I did get a little confused when the King of the Night appeared. I’m guessing this means that he either took over Kyoko’s mind and controlling her or they became acquainted in some way. All I do know is that he used her to get Eu’s attention.

It’s quite interesting really how quickly your opinions change of someone. I thought Kyoko was lovely and cute but her whole demeanour changed as soon as it was revealed that she was a psycho. Haha.

I didn’t like the King of the Night. I felt he deliberately played on Eu’s emotions so she would cause more megalos to appear and cause havoc among her friends. However, I felt that I started to develop some empathy for this dude, especially in the latter episodes. I don’t think that justifies causing harm and slicing Sera’s back though. But, I can see why he did all those things, to get Eu’s attention.

Eu is a pretty unique character. I seem to have this thing where I like girls who are completely monotonous and expressionless. Haha. Eu sort of fits that category. Every time Ayumu fantasizes about Eu, she always speaks. However, in every new episode, her voice is interpreted by different voice artists. I think that’s really unique and I’ve never really known it to be done before.

I think there are a nice variety of girls in this show, but I find that I somewhat prefer the minor female characters as opposed to the main female characters. I think Seraphim is a beauty but her tongue can be a little bit too sharp at times. Some of the things she says to Ayumu I think can be very harsh. It makes me question what kind of things they do back in her vampire ninja village.

I think girls like Taeko, Yuki and Sarasvati should get more attention and screen time.

I think Yuki is really cute and tries really hard to uphold her vampire ninja tradition when she “married” Ayumu. She can be daft at times and is a lot more chilled than Seraphim, as far as vampire ninjas go. I think after Ayumu helped her out she genuinely fell in love with him. I feel this was evident when she told Ayumu Eu’s position before she told the rest of her faction.

I’m intrigued by Sarasvati. She struck me as the type of person who is the strictest out of all the vampire ninjas. Even if she is strict, she still finds the time to perform as an idol. It looks like she fell in love with Ayumu’s…ahem…bum. Haha. I felt really sorry for Ayumu in the OVAs. His bum has been brutally attacked and at the centre of unwanted attention. I hope everyone leaves his bum alone for a while. Haha.

My favourite girl character is Taeko, with Yuki being a close second. She was the character who I think is best described as having slipped under the radar throughout the whole show. However, I could never fail to notice her. I did see her couple of times whenever she appeared but she caught my attention when I saw her in the show’s closing song. She sings the song and made a little appearance, singing about how she wants Mr Zombie [Ayumu] to notice her as she is his classmate. It’s a really sweet song and I actually bought that CD not so long ago. It’s a lovely song. =)

I did spot something interesting though, and it came around the time when Yuki presented Ayumu with a bento made for him. Taeko had another bento separate on her lap. I failed to notice this at first, but it was quite interesting to see it now. It seems like she took Kanami’s advice on board and made a bento for Ayumu. It’s a shame that he never got to eat it, I bet it would have been lovely. =)

I was really pleased when she got good screen time in the last OVA. It seems like they met a long time ago on a rainy day, and all rainy days now remind her of that encounter. She used her intelligence to “distract” Ayumu whilst Yuki won that school tournament game. I was slightly gutted though that she sings in that pool episode. If she sings for the show’s ending song then by rights she should sing in that pool episode as well. Haha.

  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

One day I decided to give Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun a watch. This is a really fun show. There were plenty of moments that made me laugh. Most of them did involve Nozaki and Mikoshiba but as far as shocked reactions go, I liked Sakura’s the best. =D I especially liked the moment when Nozaki hijacked Kashima from her flock of fans and they chased after him whilst he was pushing Kashima on that weird trolley thing. Haha.

As a fellow illustrator I did take to this show and the character Nozaki, quickly. I can relate to Nozaki in plenty of ways. I love to take pictures of nature and objects and use them for reference for when I draw backgrounds in my pictures. I don’t take pictures of people though, not without asking permission first. The only difference is that I’m not quite as adventurous or experimental as Nozaki is. Haha. It’s good to use real life nature and people as reference but sometimes I think using your imagination can be just as good, better in some cases. =) I still enjoy Nozaki’s social experiments for manga references though. They’re my favourite parts of the show.

All the characters are really nice. I thought I wasn’t going to like Mikoshiba as I thought he was going to be cocky but it turns out that he’s super shy around people he’s not familiar with. In some ways I can relate, I used to be very silent and stiff whenever I met someone new. I’m not as bad now but sometimes I do get nervous when I meet someone new. My thoughts changed on him immediately. He’s a really cool character and I find it amusing that Nozaki based his heroine on his personality. It’s hilarious, I actually wonder if Mikoshiba realised that the heroine is based on him? It doesn’t seem like it.

I was fooled a little bit at first by Kashima’s boyish demeanour as I didn’t realise she was a girl until I saw her wearing a skirt. She’s very charming in her own unique way and I don’t see any faults in her at all. That’s why I do think Hori is harsh when he hits her in comical ways. I can see from his point of view why he does but I still think it’s unjustified.^^/

My favourite character is Sakura. I find her to be cute and very lovable as well. Her big eyes and hair bows are the first thing that I noticed about her, with a nice shade of orange as well. =) She’s always nice, even during her shocked reactions. Haha. She got to know Nozaki when she started to help him with his manga, and I think she started to like him even more and accepted all of his…unique quirks. Haha. I want to make a shout out to Yukari too. She’s a very sweet young lady and if this show ever got a sequel, I would love to see her more.

I think I got used to the charm of the show quite quickly. When the moment looks as though Nozaki is going to compliment or confess to Sakura, it turned out to be a big misunderstanding. I was a bit conflicted at these parts. In one way I felt sorry for Sakura but in another way I found it hilarious. I did like their moment in the last episode though, with the fireworks. I genuinely thought Nozaki was replying to Sakura’s confession, however, it turned out that he just misheard. Still, I was happy that Sakura was able to get some alone time with Nozaki and for me the show couldn’t have ended in a better way.

Nozaki and Sakura

I have recently watched the latest WWE Raw and the WWE Fastline pay-per-view. I’m very excited about the prospect of Sting vs Triple H at Wrestlemania. At this moment I’m getting Goosebumps every time WWE are talk about Sting. I must admit and say that I always had doubt that Sting would ever go to WWE. Now he has. I’m very happy. =) My favourite match of the night was Daniel Bryan vs Roman Reigns. I actually do think that was my favourite Roman Reigns’ match.

Oh. I also learned that Inori Minase is going to voice Hestia from…inhaling…Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? Phew, that’s always difficult to say in one breath. Haha… Anyhow, I’m excited about this. She was the same voice actor who voiced Mirai Nazukari from Locodol. I liked her voice for Mirai and I anticipate that she’s going to give Hestia a really charming voice. She’s very innocent and endearing when she gets excited but mature when she needs to be. I think she’ll do a very good job indeed. It makes me even more excited for the anime. =)

Nisekoi: False Love Volume One Review

Nisekoi False Love Volume One

For some reason I had a sudden urge to review Nisekoi, the same time when I was writing my thoughts on Monster Musume Vol 4. With that, I gave into my urge.^^/

  1. SYNOPSIS

Fate works in mysterious ways especially when Chitoge and Raku meet for the first time. You will probably think, “oh, a classic shoujo moment when Chitoge bumps into Raku with a toast in her mouth!” Nope, none of that cliché stuff is involved. Their first greeting came in the form of a crash landing where Raku was acting as Chitoge’s P.E. mat.

No pun intended but the two literally got off on the wrong foot. To make matters worse, their respective families are Yakuza[1] gangs who are at odds with each other. The two leaders from the two Yakuza families negotiated a truce and were successful, but… with the request of the two leaders Raku and Chitoge had to enter into a “false” relationship to keep a war from breaking out.

It is most inconvenient for Raku. Our main hero is hoping to find the source of his promise, which lies with his memento (aka, his pendant). One day, he’s hoping to find his childhood sweetheart who holds the key that will fit the lock of his pendant.

  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

This Shounen manga is quite different in many ways. The main plot is heavily build on romance with the main male breaking the mould. He’s not dense when it comes to the ladies, he’s into romance, and, he’s a good cook. In other words, he is the modern man… in a Yakuza world.

I like Raku. He’s a little rough around the edges since his upbringing is in a Yakuza environment, so, having a little temper and being blunt is not all that surprising. Still, I think he was a little harsh yelling at Chitoge though. If he hadn’t then I don’t think she would have hit him hard. She’s the type who will give as good as she gets, perhaps giving harder. However, by doing this, we find out the type of person she is quicker, so this was necessary. =D

I feel for Raku though… he’s head over heels in love with Kosaki, yet, he has to grin and bear his own situation. He can’t really confess to Onodera for fear that this will cause a war. He can’t exactly confide in her either, not with Claude breathing down his neck!

I can see why the Yakuza dads did what they did. It does make me wonder though if they could have agreed a truce in a different way. Oh well, what’s done is done. This situation does remind me of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Two families who loath each other but the boy and girl go out with each other, with one difference though… Raku and Chitoge can’t stand each other. So, in a way, that comparison is invalid! Haha.

The key backbone of this story does literally lie with Raku’s childhood and his ancient pendant. Raku made a special promise with a girl when he was younger. He kept his pendant as a keepsake so that one day, when he meets this special girl, she will use her “key” to literally unlock Raku’s pendant. If that pendant never existed, then, I don’t think we would have a story to tell. It does make me wonder who this destined girl is. Will we ever see her? The young man is certainly determined to see her again, so it makes me think that we will.

I also have a feeling that Onodera will play a huge part as I think she is somehow linked to Raku’s pendant. I also suspect that she may harbour feelings for Raku. On what level, I don’t know. But having a picture of him in her room and getting flustered with her “key” does make my mind boggle with endless questions. I can easily say “she’s that girl from ten years ago!” but I feel that it’s too early to speculate.

At this moment in time Kosaki is my favourite character and I think she will make a very dashing girlfriend. I like very polite and gentle girls like Onodera and I’m not usually keen on happy-go-punching girls like Chitoge. Chitoge does have a nice side though; I just think that she’s in a similar situation to Raku. Due to her upbringing in a Yakuza environment she’s bound to be a little rough around the edges, so, I can easily overlook her violent tendencies. In some ways, she’s funny. Her headband is especially cute; it really does make her look like a rabbit.

  1. BONUS

We have short bonus chapters. We also have a biography page about the author with a picture showing his hair looking like spinach. =D I think it’s supposed to be spinach? Regardless, he’s fun to look at. =)

  1. CONCLUSION

This is a very funny romantic manga with many awkward moments, in a funny way. Raku has many good qualities but he does have his quirky points, due to his Yakuza connection. The romance is executed soundly. Two people, who don’t want to be other each other, are doing their best for the sake of their families. Raku, who wants to be with another girl, has to endure his pain and be part of a “false” relationship. In a way it’s like a sort of love triangle but not quite. We don’t know how Onodera feels about Raku and if her feelings will reciprocate Raku’s. I have a hunch that it won’t take too long to find out.

Oh! The art is nice too. I especially liked the comedic reactions of some of the characters. They are funny and cute.

I give this, One Thumb’s-Up and a Pinky. (My Rating System)

Thumbs-Up Pinky

Nisekoi Thanks for Reading 1

This really is easy to read. It’s interesting to note that the Nisekoi: False Love anime has announced its second season. I wonder if they will be able to cover enough of the manga materials. By reading some of the feedback on various anime sites, quite a few fans are asking the same questions. To me, it will depend on how many episodes this season will entail. Will it have 24 episodes, or, will it have 12 episodes? Perhaps it will be the latter this time around?

I’m becoming more and more tempted to write a full review of Non Non Biyori and Locodol. I’m also really keen on reviewing High School DxD. I’ll watch the Blu-ray, back to back, when the time is right. =D Coming up next will be Monster Musume Volume 4. =D

  1. STORY

2.1. Overview

This manga consisted of four chapters, all of which were quite long, so I really wanted to take my time in reading it. The plot and themes are quite deep so I found that unlike D-Frag or Monster Musume I had to read carefully in order to grasp the story. It’s a really good story by all means but it was necessary for me to take my time with it in order to enjoy it and appreciate the story more. =)

I did feel sorry for Issei when it turns out that his date, Yuuma, turned out to be a psychotic murderer… on the outside Yuuma is easy on the eye but then she sullied her own attractiveness when she murdered her ‘date’. All anime/manga girls are attractive, no question, but their appealing factor, for me, is their personalities. So, I hereby declare Yuuma as ‘ugly’. 😉

We then get the introduction of two of Issei’s friends who are erotically charged, apparently as much as Issei. I’m not so keen on over-the-top perverted characters but at this moment it seems realistic enough. Over-the-top perverted male characters tend to ‘peek’ on girls and so far, on this occasion, Issei and co are divulging their lust into dirty magazines. I can get that it’s probably what most young men would do. Apart from the fact that Issei is more concerned about his ‘date’ rather than thinking dirty thoughts.

The ravishing Rias Gremory then makes her appearance. =D She appeared in Issei’s dying thoughts and she even gazed up at him as he looked at her from the window… I wondered if there was going to be a connection between the two, and it made me wonder if she had something to do with Issei coming back to life… assuming what he experienced wasn’t a dream. A female waking up in a bed beside the lad is a typical manga cliché but I still enjoyed reading it. It was a wonderful introduction.

2.3. Chapter Two

Poor Issei… he tried to summon himself to the client’s place but it somehow didn’t come to fruition, so, he had to travel via bike. Begrudgingly, I found it hilarious. It went from being cool and dramatic to a mellow and uncool atmosphere. XD He eventually arrives at his client’s place. The client is Mil-Tan who turned out to be a big buffed otaku who likes to cosplay. Haha. The highlight of this chapter, I must say, is the introduction of the sweet and innocent sister, Asia. =)

2.4. Chapter Three

You just know that Asia is sweet just by her brief introduction and with the way that she emitted an aura of a docile and kind personality.

Issei could have easily taken advantage of her and her docile demeanour but he didn’t. However, he did the opposite. He appreciated the kind of sweet girl that she is and he actually looked out for her as if she was a little sister in distress. He was interested in her as a person and helped her to get to the church… even if it did mean causing him some pain, that’s the kind of good male character that I’d like to see. =) He even reacts to her when she shows her cross, since devils are weak against vessels and such from the church. =)

She helped a young injured boy… whilst the boy’s mother gave Asia the cold shoulder the boy thanked Asia for healing him. I’m not sure if she is nice because she’s a sister or if it’s just in her nature, however, I still like her nonetheless.

It will be interesting to see if a relationship brews between Issei and Asia. He’s a human reincarnated as a devil and she’s a nun of the church, so… we could have a forbidden romance on the cards. =D Rias, being the over-protected sister type person, will probably have contrasting views and scold Issei for interacting with someone associated with the Church. And she did just that, but that’s just because Issei met someone of the Church rather than a Romeo and Juliet situation…

And now, in this very chapter, comes the introduction of the battle system… all the devils are pieces depending on rank…. Rias Gremory, who belongs in the Gremory household, is the King and she has her very own pieces. Her queen is Akeno, who specialises in magic and is an extreme sadist… what fun. 😉 Her knight is Yuuto who is a speed type. Her rook is Koneko who uses superhuman strength. And Issei, is her pawn… in a way, Issei being a pawn is quite appropriate because pawn can have more than one meaning. 😉 Is it an innuendo? Poor Issei though… he really has a long way to go to be ‘harem king’.

These explanations were used correctly as Rias and crew battled some stray devil. Everyone showed off their abilities whilst we establish which rank each devil is… Visual aids and simple explanations do wonders for a story. =)

2.5. Chapter Four

Chapter Four, Issei sleeping in a bed- BOOM- Rias is naked next to him. We learn that Rias can’t sleep very well when she’s naked, how convenient. 😉 He resisted touching her through fear and self-control.

In every walk of life, and in manga, girls generally do have some kind of empowerment over guys. Ladies know that the gents love sex and to get in the sack they tend to do jobs or chores for the ladies since they promise them a ‘reward’ so to speak. They’re empowered because they call the shots. In this case, Rias has Issei completely wrapped around her fingers. XD He can grope her breasts if he manages to get someone’s contract… of course, this highly motivated Issei and he got straight onto the job without much fuss… I really liked the way how Rias used the word ‘deman’ in a seductive manner to Issei…mixing man and demon in the same mix… what fun.

Then came the unfortunate encounter between Issei and some chaotic priest, Freed. He got mad and they had a bit of a scuffle, naturally Issei struggled being a devil, but then who should come to his aid but the charming and amiable, Asia. =) This is where the potential forbidden love could start… she learns that Issei is in fact, a devil, her natural enemy… However, it didn’t matter to her that Issei was a devil, because he was her friend. It’s very touching…

Issei got enraged, naturally, when Freed started to get frisky with Asia… she clearly is a pacifist. It’s good that Asia is a pacifist and all but it can cause her problems in certain situations… like this one.

What luck!

Rias and the devil posse came by to aid Issei.

Oh no!

They have to leave because more fallen angels were on the way. And Issei had to leave poor Asia behind. She is the enemy of the devils and she can’t be transported through that summon thing since only Rias and her devils can transport through it. That slap from Rias did seem to be a bit harsh. Was there any need for that? Rias reassured Issei that everything was alright, since Asia has nothing incriminating on her that would merit fallen angels to hurt her…

That ending was simply heart-breaking to read. That was when Asia smiled through her tears to Issei that they will meet again… It was upsetting to read. If Freed tried to take advantage of her in front of Issei, just imagine what’s going to happen when he’s all alone with her… anything can happen. What is going to happen? I feel very nervous about Asia’s future. I’m hoping that nothing bad happens to her, but, I don’t like her chances of survival in Volume 2…

2.6. Parody Elements?

I didn’t tag this manga as a parody as it didn’t feel right. However, I did notice sporadic appearances from characters from other anime/manga.

  • The Haruhi alarm clock which is based on Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito.
  • Posing as Goku from Dragon Ball, by Akira Toriyama, when he’s about to perform the Kamehameha move
  • “I will be harem king” is a shout out to Luffy’s “I will be pirate king” from One Piece by Eiichiro Oda.
  • Motohama’s [Issei’s friend] scouter is a reference to the scouter used in Dragon Ball which is used to detected power levels.
  • Beauty Pure, the title of Matsuda’s porn parody DVD is a reference to the anime, Pretty Cure.

  1. ART AND DESIGN

Miyama-Zero has done a wonderful job with the characters and their design. The artist of this manga does a good job with the art, I find it really cute. I especially like the uniform on the girls of what looks to be a jacket of some kind… I really don’t know how to explain it but I know what I like, and I certainly like that. =D

Rias’s description was good. She has a good dynamic bloody red hair that Issei visualised within his dying moments. It was very appropriate for the situation. It makes you wonder if that is why she had red hair to begin with. With Rias having red hair Akeno having dark hair I wonder if they are supposed to represent English Rose[3] and Yamato Nadeshiko.[4] Their beautiful appearances and charismatic auras does suggest this to me.

  1. CHARACTERS

5.1. ISSEI HYOUDOU

(PAWN)

I like Issei.

By what I have observed he loves the ladies very much both emotionally and physically. Being a young man it’s only natural for him to be interested in the ladies, and he has an alarm clock in the form of Haruhi Suzumiya. Haha.

His imagination is at the forefront when it comes to getting down and dirty. However, when he wakes up with a naked Rias next to him, he becomes shy and awkward. His mind is all over the place. Imagination is one thing, but dealing with reality is something completely different. Issei may have a vivid imagination but this is his first experience of being intimate with a lady, especially with Rias. In a way I find this to be realistic. All young men have lustful desires, but nice young men won’t necessarily take advantage of the opportunity.

It came to light that Issei is a reincarnated devil and he has this strange weapon called the ‘Sacred Gear’. It makes sense now why Yuuma and other Fallen Angels would go after them, as they deem the Sacred Gear ‘dangerous’.

5.2. RIAS GREMORY

(KING)

Rias is incredibly lovely and has a cool yet humble personality.

To top it off, she is a beauty! You see… I actually do have a little thing for girls with wings. Whether it’s angel with wings, devil with wings or succubus with wings… any girls with wings basically! I like mermaids too, but let’s stop there before I get off track!

I instantly like her more than Yuuma. Her self-confidence in her looks and self-assurance is nice to see. How many ladies do you know who would sleep naked beside a young boy you just met? This tells me that she has no shame and that she has no sense of personal space. And she’s totally ok with Issei exploring her chest region should he choose to do so… oh my.

She does strike you as the big sister type who is very responsible and will look out for you if you need her to. However, whilst she is clearly very affectionate she’s also quite sexual in nature. Some of her actions and flirtatiousness can be interpreted on different levels. I would say that she treats everyone in a voluptuousness manner but I’ve only seen her treat Issei in this regard. Is he the special exception perhaps? She seems to sleep naked with him a lot, using him as a ‘pillow’. Perhaps using him as a ‘pawn’ is not a coincidence and that he fulfils her duties outside of the battlefield too. 😉

In some ways she reminds me of Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit as they’re both sensual, seductive and show their affection in a more than physical manner. Out of the two, I do actually prefer Rias. 😉

We know that she’s a devil and all but I actually think that it would be more appropriate to describe her as a succubus rather than a devil. Haha. I’m referring to her confidence in her personality rather than her actually being a succubus[5]. She would never take a man’s soul for her own gain.

5.3. ASIA ARGENTO

(SISTER)

I think Asia’s introduction was actually my favourite introduction of a character from High School DxD. I would talk about her character but I think I pretty much summed up my feelings and perception of her in the whole of Chapter Three. XD

I like girls like her who are caring, sweet and don’t judge. I can see she is a bit of a scatter brain and is a little naive. I deduce that she’s naïve due to her lack of experience in normal society. She also doesn’t get why Issei has a nose bleed. In manga, guys get nose bleeds when they get ‘excited’.

I’ll leave it as that. I look forward to seeing her more in Volume Two, if she survives that is.

5.4. AKENO HIMEJIMA

(QUEEN)

I like Akeno’s sadist side. I like anime girls to be a little bit different and unique. Normally Akeno has the appearance of a beautiful lady and acts with dignity when it comes to etiquette and polite manners. However, the bloodlust will rush when it comes to battling opponents. Being a sadist she gets off when she hurts her opponent badly… haha.

She can definitely compete with Rias in terms of being voluptuous, especially when she’s in battle. I enjoy seeing this side of her but I definitely wouldn’t want to be her opponent!

5.5. YUUTO KIBA

(KNIGHT)

Kiba is pretty cool and reliable. He is the traditional handsome man with blonde hair who will attract the ladies not only with his ruggedness but with his charm too. Very smooth and crisp sword skills too, it’s very appropriate for a knight.

5.6. KONEKO TOUJOU

(ROOK)

Koneko is cute and her looks are very misleading since she has superhuman strength and is Rias’ rook because of her unmeasurable strength. I like her.

  1. CONCLUSION

This is definitely one of my favourite manga, at least top five.

It pretty much has everything that I’d like to see in a manga. Good action with the cast’s rank based on chess pieces. It has a good fantasy story that mixes devils, angels and fallen angels. There are many parts of the story that made me laugh, engage me and make me extremely sad and worried, especially at the end. It involves ladies who have cool personalities, a caring nature and can kick your cherry behind. 😉

Plus, we have the main male who is strong and is interested in the ladies but is not over-the-top about it. He dreams about having a harem… I’m not necessarily a harem supporter but I don’t like to see any girls or guys become broken hearted so I route for a multiple boyfriend/girlfriend so that everyone’s happy… this looks like it could go that way but at the minute we have to see if a relationship will blossom between Asia and Issei.

I wonder if a tension is going to develop between Rias and Asia… better see how things go! Rias doesn’t mean to be mean to her but she is just looking out for her devils, especially Issei.

I’m gnashing my teeth at the thought of something bad happening to her!

I don’t like the fallen angels and stray devils; they treated Issei and Asia terribly. For that, I dislike them. A lot of villains have a reason why they turned evil, but with the likes of Yuuma and Freed, I don’t see any redeeming features.

I simply love the uniqueness and battle system in the style of chess pieces. I like it how everyone has a rank based on chess pieces, with the King being the highest and the pawn being the lowest… I actually wanted to create something similar in terms of a battle strategy based on the chess piece system… High School DxD evidential got there first but I still find it reassuring that other people come up with similar ideas. I see it in a way as fate telling me that great minds think alike. =)

High School DxD Poster 01

Funny enough, just as I finished reviewing Volume One, High School DxD Volume Two has just arrived. =D This week has been very kind to me indeed. I don’t anticipate that I’m going to review this any time soon as I want to read it for fun and understand 100% what’s going on within the story.

Thanks for reading. =D
