Danmachi Comic Thoughts

Hurray, it’s finally here, it’s my first full length comic based on the Dungeon Girls series. I call it, ‘Is It Wrong to Try and Capture a Rabbit in a Dungeon?’ =D

I started this comic last year around the time when the Dungeon Girls anime was televised. I got the idea from the hot springs scene when Bell accidentally fell into the hot springs and saw all the ladies naked.

What if the ladies saw a naked Bell instead? How would they react? I played around with the scenario and decided that the ladies would react by having big nose bleeds and fainting upon the sight of Bell naked. Haha.

After a while I stopped drawing this comic as I started to run out of steam and wanted to focus on other projects.

Some of you may already know that I recently had a bad chest infection and the only thing I could do was draw. In that time I suddenly remembered that I had this comic was incomplete and decided to give this another go. After much editing and shading etc I finally completed it. =)

I’m happy with the overall content of this doujin. The main purpose, for me, was to have fun with the perspectives and blue ribbon/borders. I played around the idea that Hestia’s “blue string of fate” was covering the panel borders and wouldn’t stop until it reached Bell’s pinky finger on the back page. =)

I spent much longer on the drawing than I did on the dialogue. In fact, I came up with the dialogue in five minutes when I’ve completed the whole thing. Haha.

If there’s one thing that I’m unhappy about in this comic, it would be the inconsistency of the art style. I stopped and started this comic in-between other projects. and my style became more distinctive along the way. However, instead of drawing everything from scratch to fit my current style, I decided to just finish it.

It was hardwork at times but I’m happy that it’s finally complete. You can see the comic in full in the links below =)

My First Fanmade Comic

Hi everyone, did you all have a good Valentines Day yesterday?

I did. Yesterday I did the unthinkable and actually completed my first ever doujin comic. =D

It’s a Naruto x D-Frag Crossover. For many months I’ve had this image in my head of Roka (D-Frag) getting the better of Sasuke (Naruto) in the most comical way. All I’m doing at this moment is drawing and reading manga and I decided to take this opportunity to draw this comic whilst I was in the zone. In my mind it was successful as it came out as I exactly how I pictured it. =)

I also decided to give my original character, George the Robin, a debut as he makes a small cameo on page one. Can you spot him?

If you would like to see this comic, just check out the links below.^^/

I’m now going to take this opportunity to get some more rest as I’ve still got this rather nasty chest infection. I’ve got plenty of manga to read and anime to catch up on so I’m never bored. =)

Trinity Seven: The Seven Magicians Volume One Review

Trinity Seven Volume One Cover

  1. REVIEW

Like with Strike the Blood I had a fair good idea what the Trinity Seven manga would be like as I have seen the anime show.

I found the story very entertaining to read and completed it in a day which is rather disappointing. Haha.

It’s packed with many humorous and lewd moments but it isn’t without some drama. I always prefer the more light-hearted manga like Non Non Biyori and D-Frag! but the intense scenes are used in the appropriate moments, especially the cliff-hanger right at the end of the book!

Arata is a great refreshing character and in some ways I think he’s very well balanced in this kind of manga like Kimito is in Monster Musume. I think the difference between him and Kimito is, is that Arata is more expressive and vocal than Kimito. He adapts to situations very well, especially after experiencing the whole breakdown phenomenon saga. He doesn’t shy away from girls and compliments them when necessary and even if he is perverted I get the impression that he won’t take advantage of the ladies.

I am impressed with his coping ability. I’m not sure how I would cope if the world ended, the sun turned black and being told that I was going to be killed by a beautiful lady… His reaction to his very own grimoire talking for the first time sums up his mind set perfectly. =)

The story didn’t really seem that long for some reason but I think I got the gist of how this story will be told. It’s very self-aware and at some point Arata made a quip that if Lilith did a certain thing it would give everyone a clue as to which direction the manga will be heading in. It’s those moments that made me chuckle a lot.

I like all the characters that are introduced so far, especially Lilith and Levi the ninja. It’s interesting that the more talented girls of the wizard academy mastered their own craft and have their very own Grimoires. These seven ladies, the Trinity Seven, each represent the seven deadly sins. I think I have a very good idea which deadly sin Lilith represents just by how she acts and reacts to certain situations.

I think it’s unique that the Grimoires don’t just come in forms of books, they are weapons as well. I think that’s unique because I’ve always known a Grimoire to be a book and nothing else.

I really like the concept of how Arata is part of this wizard school and is surrounded by many pretty ladies. Initially I didn’t really see it as a wizard school as I saw it more like a school of mages. Then again, as mages are like wizard it does make sense. When I think wizard school, I think instantly of Harry Potter. Trinity Seven is completely different than Harry Potter but they’re both very good in their own way. =)

Strike the Blood Light Novel Volume One Review

Strike the Blood Cover

  1. REVIEW

This is the second Light Novel book that I read through after Dungeon Girls. I had a rough idea what Strike the Blood would be like as I have seen the anime. I really enjoyed it and it put me at an advantage when reading this book. It meant that I was able to visualise the scenarios more clearly.

A lot of things started to make sense when reading this volume. In the first few episodes of the anime I was under the impression that Yukina harboured some affection and feelings for the main guy, Kojou, by her actions and dialogue.

I really like it how there’s a manmade island with many demons as its habitants. Having demons has its pros and cons. It’s a positive thing because they are like a protective species and as long as they obey the rules on the island they are free and protected by the government. The con is that they are also required to be experimented on, which is not really a nice thing.

Unfortunately for Kojou, he got caught up in all of this mess when he unintentionally became not just a vampire, but the Fourth Primogenitor. Being a vampire meant that he is immortal but being a Primogenitor means that he has 12 Beast Vessels at his disposal. Well, not quite. The Beast Vessels have a condition. They will only take him seriously as their master, so to speak, if he sucks a girl’s blood. So, basically, he’s looking for a blood donor to serve his vampire urges. Haha.

He’s not going to get a blood donour anytime soon as the only girls he knows in real life are his sister, Nagisa, his school chum, Asagi and his Class Rep, Risa. It’s awkward as he is keeping his identity as secret from the girls he’s closest too and he’s not the type of bite random girls. There is just no blood donour out there… actually, there might be, in the form of the Sword Shaman, Yukina Himeragi.

I find Yukina to be very likable and she is a complete opposite to Kojou. She’s very formal, well-spoken and a bit clueless in society, to the point where she mistakes household objects as mass destructive weapons. She’s spot on when she said that a chainsaw was used as a weapon in films though. Haha.

I even found it cute when she got tongue tied or accidentally gets Kojou into bother when she says something that could lead to a misunderstanding. Haha. She was sent to be his “watcher” but by what I read it doesn’t seem like she does her job properly. Perhaps it would be a different story if Kojou was volatile.

Her weapon, Snowdrift Wolf, is very cool. It’s like a huge spear with a tear drop or a snowflake pattern to it. I think it compliments her very well. In fact, I think the weapon is actually taller than her which adds to her glowing cuteness. I can see her being a good tactical and skilful fighter but she is more than just a weapon wielder. The only thing I think she lacks is physical strength but Kojou fills that void perfectly. I really enjoyed reading their fights against that deranged priest and Astarte.

Before I didn’t really think that there was an evil race but I found it very interesting what the author said at the back pages. He spoke about the Japan Tsunami Disaster which ironically happened just before the Strike the Blood LN was released for the first time. He cites that the natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis were the real devils.

By reading his quote, it made me think about the story in a different light.

Was that Priest a villain or was he misunderstood? After all, he was trying to take back that arm for the good of his own church… I think. Anyway, as Kojou is the Host for the 12 Beast Vessels he is vulnerable to causing humongous earthquakes if he can’t control and harness his power correctly. Is Kojou’s power the true villain in this story? Is Kojou his own worst enemy? It might be only a few words but to me it changed my view of the whole story.

I really am eager to read book two and it’s perfect to read before bed time. For now, I just have to quench my enthusiasm by watching the Strike the Blood anime.

  2. REVIEW

I really do like the trend of alternative battle shows where people battle each other but without fighting physically, like No Game No Life. In No Game No Life Sora and Shiro battle other rivals by playing games. I really, really like that concept of a battle and I’ve been on the lookout for a similar type of setting for some time and I found it in the form of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma.

I would say that Food Wars is pretty much as it sounds but I would describe it as a battle of chefs. So, think of this like Hell’s Kitchen or the Great British Bake Off but the competition is on a much bigger scale. The main guy, Sora, applies to enter into Japan’s most prestigious cooking school where the pass rate is 10%… or was it 1%? Either way the school has high standards.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Food Wars but I do know that I’ve really enjoyed this anime. Some of the battle scenes were intense and I found plenty of moments really funny.

I have to admit and say that I crack up every single time Soma smirks or grins. It might annoy Erina but it certainly makes me chuckle. I actually thought that I wasn’t going to like Soma. I thought he was going to be cocky and weird. However, I find him to be very daring, fearless, but above all, really funny. Erina, a high class lady chef, puts him down many, many times but he either doesn’t get her sarcasm or he just doesn’t care. Haha. I think it’s good that he’s not intimidated by all the high class students and I’m really pleased that he managed to blend in and make a few friends, especially those from the Polar Star.

I thought he was going to be a bad chef as well judging by his loss record against his Dad. However, it turns out that Soma is pretty good and it just meant that whilst Soma is good, he is completely outmatched by the much experienced Jouchirou. It’s pretty funny how they go out of their own way to create bad food and they find victims to eat it. Haha.

I think one of the quirkiest and funniest things of this show, apart from the wit and Soma’s facial expressions, is the female cast. By this I mean that when they eat delicious food they ‘visualise’ how they feel and either dress up in flattering clothes or they are stark naked. The girls showing their skin are easy on the eye but I also find it really, really funny. It’s ridiculous but hilarious. Haha.

The character growth should also be noted. Soma’s growth as a character is good and he becomes more mature and open-minded through cooking battles and during the field trip. I would say the biggest growth goes to Megumi, not necessarily through cooking abilities but her confidence and self-belief grows.

I enjoyed many battles in this show but my favourite battles involved Soma vs Ikumi, Soma and Megumi vs Shinomiya and whenever Soma battled his Dad.

I’m not sure if Food Wars was how I expected it to be but I do know that I most certainly enjoyed watching it. The major bonus of this series is that the food on this show looks absolutely delicious and they are designed in high detail. Every time I see Soma and co cook or bake or prepare a dish I immediately get hungry.

One of my life goals now is to cook a dish that’s been shown in the Food Wars anime. =D. Will I be able to do it? That remains to be seen.

Monster Musume Anime Review

Monster Musume Anime

  1. REVIEW

As a Monster Musume fan I was very excited when I learned that it was going to receive an anime show. However, I was half nervous especially when the official MonMusu[1] Twitter page was doing a survey asking us fans what scenes we definitely wanted to see from the manga. If they were doing this survey did this mean that they were going to omit certain scenes from the manga?

I’ve been watching this TV show very keenly and I must say that it’s much, much better than I thought that it was going to be. I was very impressed with it and I found myself laughing just as hard watching the anime as I did when I was reading the manga books. The anime does include a lot of scenes from the books but in order to make it flow they mixed it up a bit.

This really is a funny anime and it is very self-aware and it does take the mickey out of itself. I especially like it when the monster girls make a pun or a quip referring to their animal body parts. I think that’s one of the underlining charms of the series. The animal parts are not just the funny part of the series, what also does it for me are the characters and the well-timed lewdness. Haha.

I do think that there is more to MonMusu than the comedy aspects. The whole point of the story is for the Subspecies[2] to integrate into human society. That was made possible due to the Interspecies Cultural Bill which allowed the Subspecies to live in a human’s house as their guest to learn about human society.

The main guy, Kimihito Kurusu, was not chosen to be host but became a host for a lamia, Miia, due to Sumisu’s error. However, instead of complaining, he embraced Miia with open arms and became a very good and gracious host. Eventually he welcomed more additions to his non-blood family such as a harpy, a centaur, a mermaid, an Arachne and even an illegal subspecies, a slime.

I was somewhat concerned how the anime would handle Kimihito. Main guys in this type of show tend to be portrayed from one extreme to the other. However, like the manga in this show he has the perfect balance of the sort of chap that I like to see more often in an anime. He’s very aware that all of his beautiful guests love him dearly but he doesn’t cower away from their feelings, even if they do nearly kill him time and time again. Haha. He’s also very interested in them but he’s holding himself back due to his morals and he doesn’t want to break the law. What I especially like is the fact that he is not perverted in the slightest. You can be interested in a lady without being perverted. =)

All the girls in this show are brilliant and there isn’t a single character that I don’t like… apart from the racist couple and that dodgy chap from episode 6 but I consider them irrelevant. 😉 Kimihito accepts all the girls for who they are and I especially like it when he has those tender and affectionate moments with those girls. I find them very touching to the point where I nearly shed a tear. =)

To conclude, Monster Musume is very lewd but it has much more to offer than rudeness and I think that’s what makes MonMusu very special. I’ve been waiting for an anime adaptation for a very long time and not only did it meet above my expectations it has entered my top ten favourite anime of all time. =D

I want to say a big thanks to Okayado for bringing Monster Musume to life and he has actually inspired me in many ways, especially human relationships with mythical creatures. In my stories I always wanted to have a human man marry a mermaid/lamia/harpy etc but I never went through with the idea. I automatically assumed that the reader’s reaction would be negative towards me and my story.

Since Okayado introduced MonMusu and the manga became a hit in the western market he inspired me and encouraged me. Ever since MonMusu I’ve been getting epiphany after epiphany and I’m actually getting closer to getting my main story finished.

Thank you Okayado, you’re one of my favourite Mangaka[3] of all time. =)

Non Non Biyori Repeat Anime Review

Non Non Biyori Repeat Anime

  1. REVIEW

If you have been following my blogs you will know how much I like Non Non Biyori. I couldn’t tell you the amount of times that I have re-watched the first series and I have been eagerly waiting for the second season to air. I’m not really sure why the second season is called ‘Repeat.’ I see it as like it’s repeating the four seasons inside the world of Non Non Biyori.

I would be lying if I said that this was exciting and had a strong plot but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting. The diversity and quirks of the characters are great and even though they are different all the girls share a beautiful friendship. It’s especially intriguing to see how Hotaru, a girl transferred from Tokyo, adapts to the countryside.

To me the second season had everything. It has beautiful scenery that has instantly captured my interest but I find that it’s the music that draws you into the art of the show as well as the simplicity of the story. However, I find that it’s the characters that make me enjoy it much more.

You have Natsumi who is probably the female equivalent of Bart Simpson, Komari who wants to play the big sister role but really is actually childish, Renge who is eccentric but very cute and Hotaru who is shy and polite. Some of the activities and adventures that they get up to are interesting and very amusing. We occasionally get a flash back of when Renge was a baby and that is definitely worth a watch.

Even though the story might be easy-going, it did tuck at my heartstring at times at the beautiful friendship that the girls share with other, especially the bond between Renge and Kaede (aka, Candy Store.) It truly is wonderful how all the girls get on with each other despite being different, especially the new girl from Tokyo, Hotaru. It goes to show that even a city girl can adapt to the countryside.

I’m not really sure what else to say except that I think this is the perfect follow up to the first series. This is definitely one of my favourite anime of all time and I don’t think I’ve ever felt this strongly about a show since Thomas the Tank Engine. For those who may not know, Thomas was a pinnacle part of my life when I was growing up. This show literally cheers me up if ever I’m down and I always get Goosebumps whenever I listen to the songs.

There’s not much to this anime but I feel that the philosophy “less is more” sums up Non Non Biyori perfectly. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Manga Volume One Review

DanMachi manga vol 1

  1. REVIEW

This was fun to read. I felt that I was able to visualise and understand the story much better with the combination of reading the Light Novel books and watching the anime previously. By reading the volume one of Dungeon Girls[1] I felt that I was able to understand the concept and settings of the story much better, especially the God’s Blessing, Falna.

I feel that the story has a lot of RPG elements and I think it’s quirky that the manga is published by SquareEnix over in Japan. I think it would be really cool if this manga became an actual RPG and/or an online game. I would become an adventurer and join Hestia’s guild in a heartbeat. Haha. Getting back on track…

I like it how Bell admits to himself that the reason he became an adventurer is because he wanted to meet girls. He wanted to be a young maiden’s hero so he ventured down to the fifth level of the dungeon, nearly got himself killed and was saved by a beautiful princess… the sword princess called Aiz Wallenstein. Now, with his heart and conscious much “purer”, his new goal is not to pick up girls but to catch up to the lady in question.

Getting close to Aiz won’t be easy though as she is a member of the Loki Familia whilst Bell is the sole member of Hestia Familia. Hestia is cute, nice and very funny but she is also a little childish. I get the sense with Hestia that even though she is childish she will be sensible and mature when she needs to be. I do find it cute when she snuggles up to Bell though.

Bell shouldn’t focus primarily on Aiz as Hestia is a keeper but he’s probably holding himself back from Hestia as she is his Goddess. Speaking of keepers and slapping rings around lovely ladies, Syr and Eina are also lovely. It was funny when Syr played innocent to get the better of Bell. If I was Bell I certainly would never beat Syr. She is far too cute to compete with. She’s also a lot of fun to draw.

For those who are interested you can find my chibi version of her in the link below.

Chibi Syr

It was rather cool to see how far Hestia would go to help Bell, to the point where she would do the Dogeza in front of Hephaistos. She really is a nice Goddess.

I got a little bit pumped up when Loki and Freya had their little “chat,”… I wonder if Aiz knew if Freya was referring to Bell. Speaking of which, when Bell ran out of the restaurant Aiz said Bell’s name in her head. As far as I knew Aiz never met or knew Bell previously. Perhaps the explanation is simple. I did feel sorry for her when everyone in her fellow Familia members laughed at her for “scaring” Bell away.

Freya is quite the cunning Goddess. She’s beautiful but I do get the sense that she’s very evil and sneaky especially as Loki called her out specifically. Bell and Hestia had better keep on their toes and stay away from Freya as far away as they can as I get the sense that Freya sees herself as above the law.

Thinking about Bell’s situation reminds of the song, “run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run, run, run!!”

I wasn’t going to review this as really I didn’t feel that there wasn’t anything to say seeing as I’ve already reviewed the Light Novel and all the Dungeon Girls episodes. However, I had a sudden change of heart when I re-read Volume 1 manga and when Volume 2 arrived this very morning. My excitement took over and in the end I decided to share my thoughts.

[1] The correct abbreviation for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? Is DanMachi. However, out of habit, I kept referring to it as Dungeon Girls so I decided to keep calling it Dungeon Girls. Haha.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Fifteen Thoughts

Ikumi and Aldini Eyecatch

It was good to see Soma’s dad again and he kindly prepared the dishes for all the residents of the Polar Star Dormitory. It’s interesting to note that he used to be called Saiba. This is just a guess on my part but maybe his wife’s surname was Yukihira and he used that name once he married her. I heard that in Japan the guy takes on the lady’s family name when married. I really didn’t expect for him to be an alumnus of Totsuki Academy. I wonder why he didn’t graduate.

I did enjoy seeing Megumi, Ryouko and Yuki reacting to Jouichirou’s dish. They all looked really dashing in those Arabian clothes. I wonder if it’s possible to fall in love with someone through cooking. If it is possible then Jouichirou will have a group of female fans straightaway. I grinned when Soma misread the glances from the girls. If he can improve his cooking then he will get a flock of groupies in no time. Haha.

Erina’s reactions to Soma’s antics I think were hilarious. I never expected for her to be a fan of Jouichirou though. I immediately thought it was cool but weird. Surely Erina would have made a connection that Jouichirou is Soma’s dad. But, seeing as he went with the name Saiba it sort of makes sense why Erina wouldn’t make that connection.

I wonder how she will react once she learns of the father and son connection. Will she still treat Soma coldly or will she show him a little more respect?

I’m looking forward towards the impromptu Shokugeki battle between Jouichirou and Soma. However, I still think that the Dad will come out on top.

Food Wars End Card

I was very late in posting this because I’ve only just watched this. Haha. I decided that I will keep posting my thoughts on Food Wars on a weekly basis. I like the new opening and ending songs, I think they’re rather catchy.

I’m impressed with this anime season so far. I enjoy watching the new Non Non Biyori series and I’m enjoying Monster Musume a lot more than I thought I would. I re-watched episode 2 three times. =) I wasn’t planning on watching SHIMONETA but I’m definitely enjoying that as I keep on cracking up laughing whenever I watch it. =)

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Fourteen Episode Thoughts

Food Wars Street Fighter Parody Endcard

This was really exciting to watch. I actually think it’s my personal favourite episode of Food Wars yet. Did Soma adjust the recipe? Or, did he decide to put on a show? I’m pleased that he managed to attract a young sweet girl who got pushed out from tasting Erina’s dish. Live cooking looks like fun. I sort of did live cooking when I was in the kitchen at college, but, it was nothing of Soma’s calibre. Haha.

It was amusing when Soma was ignoring Erina to focus on his own dish. It was more to the point that he was analysing the situation. It was incredible how he quickly adapted to the situation and went incredibly fast to cook that soufflé dish thing. The battle music compliments that scene very well. It was intense and exciting to watch, especially as Soma was trying to beat the clock in 30 minutes. I do think it was a bit of a small victory on Soma’s part when he managed to take away some of Erina’s customers. It was especially amusing when he gave that thumbs up towards Erina. I don’t like it when people give a smug face but I find myself laughing every time Soma gives a smug face. Haha.

Luckily Soma managed to complete 200 servings just in time. Had he done all that in the beginning, I wonder if he could have managed more. Erina completed over 400 servings and Alice managed 380 servings. Had Alice had more ingredients than I reckon she could have matched Erina’s number.

I thought I wasn’t going to like the new girl, Alice Nakiri, until I got to know her a little better. It seems like she’s a wannabe villain but every time she tries to act cool it somehow backfires. She wanted her right hand man to explain her history with Erina but that backfired so she ended up explaining it. It was really funny to watch. I especially liked it when it showed a young Erina calling a cake disgusting, the same cake that a young Alice made for her.

Alice’s dish did look pretty amazing. I liked it when she turned that egg into like a drink. The egg sits on an egg cup made out of chocolate and you use the straw to drink the chocolateness from side. It’s like an adapted version of an Easter Egg and Egg and Soldiers.

I am pleased that Soma didn’t feel sorry for himself. If anything, he took it in his stride. He actually admitted that he was ignorant. Yet again Alice has failed to intimidate a person. Haha. It’s definitely good experience for Soma though.

The ending was misleading, but in a good way. Luckily, Soma and co are treated to dishes that are prepared and made by the alumnus of Totsuki. Good for them. All of the Polar Star Gang managed to pass too, including Zenji, remarkably. I wonder if Hinako made a special dish just for Megumi?

I wonder what the Autumn Elections are.

This has definitely been my favourite episode yet and I feel that it’s more than appropriate to make a shout out to the Eyecatch and Endcards as they are parodies of Street Fighter. Ingenious, in my opinion. I really do like Erina parodying Blanka. Haha. I think Ryouko would have suited cosplaying as Crimson Viper.

Thanks for Reading. =)
