Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Episode 16 Thoughts

Food Wars Episode 16 Eyecatch

I really enjoyed the battle between Soma and his Dad and I liked the judging panel. I thought it was amusing how Megumi was elected to be the third judge when she was in her half-awake state.

It’s funny because in episode one I hugely underestimated Soma’s cooking abilities. As he lost to his Dad for the 489th time and he made unorthodox dishes I automatically assumed that he was going to be a bad cook. However, since entering the academy he’s been on a big role and is especially impressive when it comes to adapting quickly to situations. In this battle, it doesn’t really show that Soma is a bad cook it just shows how incredible Jouichirou is as a chef.

That apple dish that Soma dished up looked really nice. I think Satoshi and Fumio in her younger days would make a nice couple. It was fun to watch them dance together in their visualisations. It was funny when Megumi was visualising herself as Snow White being picked up by a prince with an apple head!

However, it seems that Jouchirou deliberately dropped by to give Soma motivation, I.E., beating him as it seems that losing just makes Soma more determined. Soma always knew that he was going to lose but he’s never been a bad loser, so far he has been dignified in defeat.

It was good that Satoshi gave him constructive feedback. Satoshi is part of the elite ten so his opinions, when it comes to cuisine, are worth taking on board.

So, Ryouko and Yuki wanted Jouchirou’s advice and tips to improve their skills as chefs. I think really, deep down, they just wanted to smooch up to him because they fancy him. Haha. Well, they fell in love with his cooking more like!

It was interesting how Erina sensed Jouchirou was nearby and ordered the car to stop at once so she could see his idol. It will be interesting to see her reaction once she discovers that Jouchirou is Soma’s Dad.

It seems that I enjoy Food Wars more as the weekly episodes go by. I’m looking forward to the next one. =)

Food Wars Episode 16 Endcard

I’m looking forward to WWE Night of Champions as Sting is challenging Seth Rollins for the WWE World title. It would be amazing if Sting became world champion but I really can’t see WWE allowing that to happen unfortunately. It would be quite a send-off for Sting if this was the case as I got the impression from Sting’s speech on Raw that he intends to retire soon. Then again, perhaps I read his speech wrong?

In an ideal world for me Sting would win the championship from Seth Rollins. It wouldn’t be just for the heavyweight championship either. I think he should have put the United States title on the line too. That way Sting would not only win the WWE title but he would win the former WCW secondary title of the United States. I think that would have been an amazing touch but alas John Cena is challenging Rollins for the US title.

After beating Seth Rollins at Night of Champions Sting would face the Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series. Survivor Series would be the most appropriate match for Undertaker to challenge Sting as both Undertaker and Sting made their WWE debut at Survivor Series. It could be the best way for Undertaker and Sting to retire if it’s appropriate. If not, then perhaps at Wrestlemania?

To get back on track-

I’m somewhat behind with Food Wars and other anime as of late as I’ve been busy with other projects such as renovating my garden and the summer house. However, I have found some time to myself and I’m taking this opportunity to play catch up as well as playing Atelier Shallie’s second play through.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Five Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

I really wouldn’t be surprised if the Mangaka[1] of Food Wars used to be a chef. The type of ingredients and dish that has been shown in this anime are really top notch and I doubt that someone could make them up without a great deal of research. I worked in the kitchen back when I was at college and there’s no way that I would have been able to conjure up that type of food.

I always wondered what the term “shokugeki” means and I finally found out through Isshiki’s explanation. Basically, it’s a cook-off between two people who wish to battle each other. In this case, Soma wants to battle Isshiki but he declined Soma’s challenge. I think that’s probably for the best, I too would not want to see Soma lose.

Erina was completely ruthless when she beat that leader of the sumo Chanko Hot Pot Research Society. She completely demolished the building after the shokugeki battle between the two. Are all the buildings in the academy seriously in use? Why does Erina need any more? It seems like she’s abusing her authority just because she can and she doesn’t really care who she crushes as it’s all for the good of the academy.

That visualisation of Erina swimming and walking on that island was both pleasant on the eye and hilarious. I knew something funny was about to happen but I didn’t foresee a herd of hippos coming. Haha. How does Erina possess such a wild and vivid imagination? I’m not complaining though as those visualisations are fun to watch. =D

It was implied that Isshiki was holding back after he “drew” with Soma in the cook-off. That would make a lot of sense as there needs to be a biggish gap between the Elite Ten and Soma. It would be fun to watch Soma gradually reach the same level as the Elite Ten through time.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other dorms in the academy. If there is than I wonder if there could potentially be Shokugeki battles between dorms, like the Polar Star Dorm versus the Joe Bloggs Dorm. I think that would be pretty awesome and I would really like to see Soma team up with Megumi and Isshiki. =)
I wonder who that new girl is. I also wonder who the “target” is.

I’m going to make a big guess now and say that she’s going to challenge someone from the Polar Star gang and it will be either Megumi or Soma. Fumio hinted that everyone in the current Polar Star dorm is nowhere good enough to be part of the Elite Ten, apart from Isshiki. That makes me think that the “weak targets” will be those from the Polar Star. =)

Prince William and Kate Middleton

I just want to make a shout out to the royal family to say congratulations to William and Kate on having a healthy baby girl. =) I think it was really cool that a small town crier delivered the news. I would have liked to have done that myself. =D

What does any think they’ll name her? I’m going to throw traditional names on the table such as Mary and Elizabeth but I personally believe they’ll name her Victoria. Perhaps her middle name will be Jane or May? I don’t think middle names are a necessity but quite a lot of people have them.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Four Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

I grinned immediately when Soma made the observation that there were many quaint looking buildings in that huge forest. I was actually asking the same questions that he was asking. Why are there so many buildings? I know it’s a top notch food academy but surely the academy don’t require that many buildings. Perhaps these buildings cater for specialised equipment.

Soma had to make a dish out of nothing as soon as he got to the dormitory. I would feel sorry for him as he doesn’t seem like he can get a break, but he adapts very well to the situation.

It’s pretty cool how he was able to make that burger out of nothing and Fumio approved straightaway. We don’t see her visualised reactions but we do see what she looked like when she was in her younger days. She was quite a beauty and very demure. I went from admiring her youth to laughing my socks off the next moment when Fumio got caught up in the moment and tried to kiss Soma. She mistook him for her childhood love. Haha. It was really funny. =D

Poor Megumi is the one student who can’t get a break. She says that she dislikes Soma but I don’t really think this is the case. It’s more that she can’t really cope with his strong personality. Still, I didn’t think anyone could experience exhaustion by reacting to food dishes that Soma concocts. Haha. In some ways, Megumi is similar to Mayumi, Soma’s classmate from episode one. They’re both similar in the fact that they allow Soma to force feed them good and bad food. Haha.

It was really cool that the rest of the dormitory wanted to organise a welcome party for Soma. Initially I was suspicious as I assumed that they were all out to get him, especially the naked chef, aka, Satoshi Isshiki. They all appear to be genuine and were having fun trying out each other’s food. The elderly lady was very understanding and didn’t give any of them a ticking off. It seems like she’s the type who is strict but fair. That and Soma made her taste buds dance with joy so it’s only natural that she would be lenient as far as Soma was concerned.

I grew more wary of Isshiki near the end. It was pretty amusing when he got naked and wore an apron. I have no doubt that all the lady viewers would have enjoyed that moment. Haha. Anyway, when he concocted that last dish for Soma I actually thought he added some kind of bad stuff. However, it turns out that it tasted absolutely delicious.

Then it turns out that Isshiki is actually one of the Elite Ten of the academy and he’s in the Seventh Seat. He’s in the Seventh Seat whilst Erina is in the Tenth Seat of the Elite Ten and Student Council. I really wasn’t expecting him to be part of the elite, and I certainly wasn’t expecting him to outrank Erina as I somehow assumed that she was number one.

Good luck Soma!
