Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Light Novel Volume Four

Danmachi Light Novel 4

Is it me, or is Bell prodding Hephaistos’ boob on the front cover? Well, she is burying his face in her other boob so I suppose it’s a “tit-for-tat” kind of situation, excuse the pun. Haha.

  1. REVIEW

This was exciting to read.

I’m happy that Bell finally managed to become a level 2 but I do get the impression that from now on he has to watch his back. Bell’s growth (thanks to the Realis Phrase ability) was under the radar all this time but now that he has levelled up, the Gods and Adventurers alike have suddenly taken notice.

Hestia needs to be careful as well, especially as Freya defended Bell during the Denatus meeting. It does make me wonder if Freya will try another scheme to make Bell her “property”. I do think that she genuinely harbours love and affection for him and she is the reason why Bell more or less overcame his fear of Minotaurs and is able to cast magic. Is she helping him out of love, or out of selfishness? I don’t know what to make of Freya, I like her but at the same time I don’t like her. She’s fascinating yet complicated. XD

I was impressed with Welf Crozzo’s introduction. I really like him and I think the history of his ancestors is especially interesting. I watched the anime so I am somewhat spoiled but I still had no idea that his family’s origins were that deep. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his views and philosophy on forging and creating magic weapons and regular weapons. I think it’s more than appropriate that someone like him is the exclusive blacksmith for Bell. I think it’s awesome as well that he forged Bell’s Minotaur horn into a dagger.

At first I wasn’t really keen on Lili but I discovered that throughout this book Lili is actually growing on me. She’s very street wise and she’s the type of, “it takes one to know one” kind of her person. She knows a con-artist when she sees one and this was demonstrated when Bell and Lili took on Nahza’s request.

Speaking of Nazha’s request, I really like the extra stories that this book offered at the end. Learning about Nahza’s past was insightful and it made sense why she was over-charging Bell’s potions and doesn’t go dungeon crawling. It’s interesting to know when these events happened. I actually wondered how he managed to squeeze in this quest during his training with Aiz without Hestia or Lili sussing him out. XD

I always had the vision of Bell buying Hestia a pair of cute ribbons with chimes and I came to learn that this actually happened. =) I thought it was a nice moment when Bell gave Hestia her ribbons for the first time. It just shows the strong bond that Hestia and Bell have for each other.

Hestia wanted to do something “God-like” and buy him the sword that he wanted but whilst she didn’t achieve it then, she certainly achieved it later on when his dagger was hand-crafted by Hephaistos herself. So, one could argue that Bell in fact got an “upgrade”, all thanks for Hestia. =)

I’m hoping that these short stories continue to appear in the Light Novels as I want to learn more about the supporting characters like Ryu, Syr, Aiz and Hephaistos. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Manga Volume One Review

DanMachi manga vol 1

  1. REVIEW

This was fun to read. I felt that I was able to visualise and understand the story much better with the combination of reading the Light Novel books and watching the anime previously. By reading the volume one of Dungeon Girls[1] I felt that I was able to understand the concept and settings of the story much better, especially the God’s Blessing, Falna.

I feel that the story has a lot of RPG elements and I think it’s quirky that the manga is published by SquareEnix over in Japan. I think it would be really cool if this manga became an actual RPG and/or an online game. I would become an adventurer and join Hestia’s guild in a heartbeat. Haha. Getting back on track…

I like it how Bell admits to himself that the reason he became an adventurer is because he wanted to meet girls. He wanted to be a young maiden’s hero so he ventured down to the fifth level of the dungeon, nearly got himself killed and was saved by a beautiful princess… the sword princess called Aiz Wallenstein. Now, with his heart and conscious much “purer”, his new goal is not to pick up girls but to catch up to the lady in question.

Getting close to Aiz won’t be easy though as she is a member of the Loki Familia whilst Bell is the sole member of Hestia Familia. Hestia is cute, nice and very funny but she is also a little childish. I get the sense with Hestia that even though she is childish she will be sensible and mature when she needs to be. I do find it cute when she snuggles up to Bell though.

Bell shouldn’t focus primarily on Aiz as Hestia is a keeper but he’s probably holding himself back from Hestia as she is his Goddess. Speaking of keepers and slapping rings around lovely ladies, Syr and Eina are also lovely. It was funny when Syr played innocent to get the better of Bell. If I was Bell I certainly would never beat Syr. She is far too cute to compete with. She’s also a lot of fun to draw.

For those who are interested you can find my chibi version of her in the link below.

Chibi Syr

It was rather cool to see how far Hestia would go to help Bell, to the point where she would do the Dogeza in front of Hephaistos. She really is a nice Goddess.

I got a little bit pumped up when Loki and Freya had their little “chat,”… I wonder if Aiz knew if Freya was referring to Bell. Speaking of which, when Bell ran out of the restaurant Aiz said Bell’s name in her head. As far as I knew Aiz never met or knew Bell previously. Perhaps the explanation is simple. I did feel sorry for her when everyone in her fellow Familia members laughed at her for “scaring” Bell away.

Freya is quite the cunning Goddess. She’s beautiful but I do get the sense that she’s very evil and sneaky especially as Loki called her out specifically. Bell and Hestia had better keep on their toes and stay away from Freya as far away as they can as I get the sense that Freya sees herself as above the law.

Thinking about Bell’s situation reminds of the song, “run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run, run, run!!”

THANKS FOR READING

Hestisa, Bell and Aiz

I wasn’t going to review this as really I didn’t feel that there wasn’t anything to say seeing as I’ve already reviewed the Light Novel and all the Dungeon Girls episodes. However, I had a sudden change of heart when I re-read Volume 1 manga and when Volume 2 arrived this very morning. My excitement took over and in the end I decided to share my thoughts.

Thanks for Reading,

Ryan.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon anime

  1. SYNOPSIS

When Bell was little his Grandpa would often tell him tales about heroes and how they always saved the girl from a monster. Bell kept the tales about Argonaut told by his Grandpa close to his heart. When he was old enough he became an adventurer, not only to become strong but to pick up girls in the dungeon. However, he came across a Minotaur which resulted into being saved by a beautiful girl with golden hair and golden eyes called Aiz Wallenstein. His current goal now is to catch up to his saviour and be as strong as the person that he admires.

  2. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

I look for certain things in an anime. When I look for slice of life stories with no drama I find stories like Non Non Biyori and Locodol. When I look for humorous comedy I find D-Frag and Sabagebu: Survival Game Club. When I look for good fantasy stories that involve beautiful ladies and chess pieces I find High School DxD. When I look for battles or games that don’t involve physical fighting I find No Game No Life and Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma.

Now, another requirement has been crossed off my list. I have looked for an anime that is based on a roleplaying game like Final Fantasy online but it’s more of a story than an online game. I find that aspect in the form of this anime, Dungeon Girls.[2]

It covers many aspects of online gaming when it comes to conquering certain levels of the dungeon. The adventurers come from all kinds of races from human, to elves, to animal people and so on. They can also buy armour, collect dropped items from the monsters and have weapons and armours made for them by blacksmiths. The biggest shout out to the game aspect is the levelling up. Instead of being part of link groups the adventurers are part of Familias but they can still form their own parties with other adventurers.

I pretty much like everything about this show really, especially the characters and the fights. Bell had a great growth as a character and it wasn’t all down to his Realis Phrase ability. There were times where I wanted him to get a grip but I then remind myself that he’s only fifteen years old. He’s still a young man so it’s natural that he won’t be the bravest dude in the dungeon as he’s still learning about life and the nastiness in the dungeons. However, his growth grew at a tremendous rate as he delved into the dungeon. It was literally thanks for Aiz. Because of Aiz saving him it made him strive to become stronger. He literally went from strength to strength and grew at a quick rate thanks to his ability, Realis Phrase.

His ability made it awkward for Hestia so she hid that fact from him, both to protect him for himself and from other Goddesses who might be watching in secret. She is always severely jealous of the fact that Aiz is the reason why he’s getting stronger, not her. She’s still happy for him by all means but she probably is resentful of the fact that Aiz is the cause of his growth.

I feel that Aiz isn’t the sole reason for his growth. Everyone played their parts really well. Aiz not only gave him a reason to get stronger but she also physically trained him and his combat skills improved as a result. Hestia gave him a reason to protect someone precious and one of his important people is Hestia. Not only does he see Hestia as a Goddess but he sees her as family.

Everyone at the Mistress of Abundance, Syr, Mia and Ryu all played their part by encouraging Bell and being good friends. Eina helped by introducing him to a good shop of armours which led Bell to finding an armour outfit crafted by Welf Crozzo. Lili helped by becoming his supporter, without her, he wouldn’t be able to collect so many stones. Without Welf, whom he eventually meets, he wouldn’t go down to the lower floors to fight the stronger monsters. Welf also crafted him the Ushiwakamaru weapon which was moulded from a Minotaur’s horn.

Freya played her part strongly, albeit, indirectly… if it wasn’t for her, Bell would never have learned the Firebolt move, and if it wasn’t for her, he would never have faced and beat that Minotaur. She was also the reason he overcame his fear of Minotaurs. As a result he also gained the Argonaut special manoeuvre. Freya is a wicked Goddess, yet, she probably is among the characters of this show who contributed the most to Bell’s growth. I really do like that aspect of the story. A villain who is helping a hero get stronger I think is really unique. Is it really for her own gain? Or, does she genuinely want to see him get stronger? It’s no secret that she desires him but it seems as though she’s willing to be patient, until she can get what she wants. I think Bell can feel her gaze from a distance, but he doesn’t necessarily know that she’s the source. Does he know that she exists? It will be interesting to see what happens if or when Bell meets Freya.

Freya is doing good deeds for Bell, but not necessarily for the right reason…

Apart from the nasty men who picked on Bell I do actually like all the characters from this show. I really like Hestia as she’s both cute and very, very funny. I especially enjoy the moments when she gets jealous of the other girls who come into contact with Bell. However, she’s serious when she needs to be. I also find it touching whenever she embraces Bell through comfort and relief. I think she’s the perfect Goddess for Bell. I also really enjoyed when she activated her Arcanum divine power to stop the fighting in episode 12. That was a really cool moment.

I think developing relationship with girls on all levels is the underlining theme of this show as the title is about picking up girls. Haha. Bell’s Grandpa told Bell that he can be a hero and protect girls and I think that really stuck with Bell when he grew up. I think at this moment Bell really does have a pick from all the girls in this anime.

All the ladies are really nice in their own way. Hestia is great. Syr is just really cute and innocent and has a lovely personality. Eina is very considerate but is probably a little awkward at times. The Amazon Twins, Tione and Tiona are really cool and they have really cool Amazonian looks about them. Demeter is a beauty and it’s a shame that she didn’t appear more often. Aiz is strong but very, very innocent in nature. Riveria is really cool and I like her green hair as it gives her that nature look. Ryu is awesome both in appearance and in combat. Mikoto is cute but I can’t help but wonder why she looks sad all the time. Lili was not very nice at first but she eventually came around to be a good supporter for Bell. I even somewhat like Freya… she’s beautiful and all but I do think she has a little bit of a crazy side about her and I think I’m actually intrigued by that crazy side. Haha.

If there’s one thing that I probably didn’t enjoy so much it was the way that Bell screamed every time Aiz or another girl touched him affectionately. Never mind potions or an antidote I think what Bell really needs is a throat lozenge. With the amount of screaming that he does he’s bound to get a sore throat one of these days. In all seriousness, I think it will do him good if he didn’t overreact as much as he already made Aiz sad when he ran away from her. Then again, he is fifteen so will it be expected for a boy to run away?

I think the more girls flirt with him, the more he will get accustom to it and take it in his stride. If a girl wants to show her affection towards you, you should let them.^^/

The fights were pretty awesome too. My favourite ones included the time when Bell beat that monkey to protect Hestia, to beat that Minotaur to show his growth and when he beat that Monster Rex along with Ryu, Welf, Asufi and Mikoto. They were all really intense and in my opinion they showed Bell’s growth as a person and as an adventurer.

I would have like to see Naza more and I definitely would have liked to hear her speak. She sounded like a really interesting person and I enjoyed visualising her voice when reading the Light Novel books. Sadly, the anime didn’t show her as much as I would have liked.

In all honesty, I could talk about this forever but I feel that it would be wise if I to make it as concise as I could.

What I would really like to see is a special episode or an OVA about the time when Bell and Hestia first met. I read the epilogue in the first LN[3] book and I really, really enjoyed it. I really hope that that small chapter gets animated someday. =)

Thanks for Reading. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Episode Eleven Thoughts

Bell and Hestia Endcard

I was a little nervous as I really didn’t know what was going to happen. Bell and his party looked like they were in pretty bad shape. Still, I’m glad they managed to reach the eighteenth floor and even managed to get past that Goliath. I wonder how that Goliath was able to respawn so quickly. Perhaps a lot of time passed between the last episode and this one? Or maybe it respawned through special circumstances. Hopefully, Freya is not involved and that is just a coincidence.

I really like the look of the eighteenth floor, the Labyrinth Utopia. The tree and the crystal ceilings are beautiful. I was just as surprised as Bell to learn that this floor also has a town. It makes sense as this designated area is actually a safe point. It’s pretty handy.

It seems that the Loki Familiar have finished their expedition. I’m going to assume that they managed to complete the 59th floor. Many congratulations to them. I bet it’s going to be big news when they go back to the surface as it is a big deal. I’m glad that Bell got to see Aiz again. I must say that I didn’t think that the Loki Familiar would appear again so quickly. I’m glad they did as it meant that we get to see Aiz again.

I knew Mikoto would be the one that would do the Dogeza pose. I think Bell forgave Mikoto and her party as he didn’t seem as angry or as unforgiving as Lili and Welf. I did expect that though. I think something is up with that Mikoto girl and I think Bell is sensing that something is up with her. I just think she looks sad all the time, then again, it could be just the way that she’s been drawn. Haha.

Bell and Hestia’s reunion was touching and almost perfect- until Lili dragged Hestia off of Bell. Haha. I sort of feel bad as I thought it was funny with the way that Hestia was rolling down that mountain. XD It was also funny when she interrupted Bell’s and Aiz’s moment when Aiz invited him out to town. Technically, Hestia is wrong here. Bell didn’t invite Aiz out, Aiz invited Bell out. So, Hestia could still be the first one for Bell to ask out to town. Well, Hestia was Bell’s first ever date, depending on how you look at it. Lili was there too, albeit, we only hear her rather than see her.

Does Aiz not know what a date is? I can’t really decide if she was annoyed at those Amazon twins for making a fuss over Bell or if she was a little jealous. She is a very pure lady so she wouldn’t flirt with Bell in the way they did as she shows affection through less physical means. I know she will willingly give Bell lap pillows but I don’t think that counts as flirting.

Hestia is right to be suspicious of Hermes as I am as well. Who told Hermes to take a look at Bell? Oh dear, don’t tell me he’s in cahoots with Freya. In the previous episode I had a theory that Hermes and Freya could be at war with each other and both would want to take Bell away from Hestia. But what if they were actually working together?

They’re two episodes left and the season needs to finish strongly with a dramatic twist. What if a bunch of Minotaurs venture down to the eighteenth floor whilst the Loki Familiar battle Goliath? It has already been shown that the monsters can go onto different floors with a push in the right direction, mostly from Freya. Something is going to happen I reckon and I wouldn’t be surprised if Hermes spearheads that operation against Bell and co.

That and it looks like Welf gets a new weapon from Hephaistos. He doesn’t look happy about it. If that is a new weapon and not a blacksmith tool then he will need to show what he can do in the dramatic ending battle. And I really would want to see more of Ryu in action. It was only brief but she certainly knows how to take the monsters down. =)

One final note, Argonaut is a good name for Bell.

Thanks for Reading. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Episode Ten Thoughts

Hestia Endcard

I do feel sorry for Bell and his party. If it weren’t for Ouka, Mikoto and their party steering monsters Bell’s way then Bell and his party would have been safe. It’s a good thing that the 18th floor is a safe point. I thought Bell’s salamander cloak was just a design to make him look cool, but as it turns out the cloak acts like a defensive shield as well. He looked pretty darn awesome when he wiped the floor with those Minotaurs. I think he’s got a good battle strategy against the Minotaur people now. Bell and co have done pretty darn well not to get killed yet.
It was funny how Welf and Lili were calling those rabbits Bell as Bell has often been described as a white rabbit. Haha.

Freya, the evil goddess, mentioned about how she was the only one who should “play with him,” obviously referring to Bell to be the one that she “plays” with. But, was she directing that sentence at Hermes? It seems weird how he’s suddenly came onto the scene and has taken an interest in Bell. I doubt it will be the same level of obsession as Freya’s but I do find it weird that he’s taken a sudden interest. If my theory about Hermes is right then I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a psychological battle with Freya where the victor gets to “play with” Bell.

I’m somewhat excited yet nervous about Hestia going into the dungeon, even if she is guarded by Ajif and Ryu. Ryu looks pretty darn cool in her cloak and for a good while I was sort of wishing that I would see her in action, because I know she will be awesome in the dungeon. I wonder if they will manage to get to Bell in time. I reckon Ryu and Mikoto will slice up the big monsters just as Bell passes out or something in the next episode.

Speaking of Mikoto, I’m glad we actually get to see her as I was wondering what she looked like. She looks pretty but I do think her eyes look sad. Perhaps it’s because she’s a serious character. She certainly had the look of guilt when she ran with the rest of her party to safety. I reckon she will be apologetic to Bell when this whole ordeal is over.

Speaking of seeing new faces, we actually get to see Nahza, Miach’s only Familiar member. Hurray. I would have liked to hear her speak but I’m happy that we just get to see her.

I wonder if Hestia and Hermes will get reprimanded for going into the dungeon. Hephaistos and Miach are going to overlook it, but will Freya? Freya is obviously stalking Bell from a distance and she will no doubt spot Hestia and Hermes in the dungeon. I am somewhat concerned about this as Freya could easily blackmail Hestia as Gods and Goddesses are forbidden from entering the dungeon. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.

One more thing to say… Hestia looks really cute in those glasses. Is that a disguise? It’s a bit of a poor attempt if it is. Haha.

Thanks for Reading. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Episode Four Thoughts

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon anime

My guess on Hestia working part-time for Hephaistos was right. This way she could pay her back quicker. She really suits the maid outfit.

Eina looks rather dashing but still dignified in her casual outfit. I can’t help but think that she looks completely different without her glasses. Subtle changes like that can be quite amazing. =) She was a little playful too. I didn’t think she had in her to be flirtatious. Perhaps being around Bell has brought this side out of her. I didn’t know she was 19, Bell made it sound like she was older than she appears.  It was nice of Eina to invite Bell to the Blacksmith department.  I really like the look of his armour, and that special present that Eina gave him looks especially important.

I wasn’t sure what to make of Lili. In the last episode she was treated badly by that dude, but she was actually smiling. Did she enjoy getting ill treatment? The same sort of thing did happen in this episode. But then, it seems like everything was a plot on her part. She deliberately did a bad job for the man until a better offer came along, and that better offer was Bell. She wanted to become his supporter so she could try and nab his knife and pawn it off. She couldn’t pawn it off as that knife can only be used by Bell.

Bell did not show any signs of suspicion or distrust towards Lili, and he didn’t hesitate to share the profit that the two of them earned. Lili was naturally surprised. I have a theory that she probably knew of Bell for some time and thought that she could take advantage of his good nature. In a way, she has. But Bell is genuinely sharing the profit with her without knowing her real intentions. That’s the kind of good guy he is.

I do wonder if the Soma Familiar as at the back of Bell’s mind. Eina brought to his attention that those from the Soma Familiar tend to be “desperate” for something. It does make me wonder why they are so money grabbing and quick to pawn off goods. Are they financially unstable? Is Soma, the God or Goddess, money grabbing? Is he materialistic? It’s all guessing games at the minute but I do have a feeling that Lili is not going to keep the money that Bell shared with her to herself. It’s either going to be taken away from her forcefully by this Soma God/Goddess or something else.

I think already Lili is warming up to Bell. He seems to attract girls without even trying. The stern looking Ryu has even stepped up and stopped the dude from fighting Bell. It was rather cool how she was able to detect that Lili was carrying the Hestia Knife without losing her cool. It was even cooler when she knocked Lili off balance with a single coin throw. Haha. I think it’s more than appropriate to say that I wouldn’t want to meet her in a dark alley. She demonstrated what she’s capable of!

Did Syr show a face a jealously when Bell shock Ryu’s hands? Speaking of Syr, I think she needs more air time. One can never get enough of her. Hestia is my favourite female from the show, but Syr provides a strong competition for first place. As does Aiz.

Back on subject-

How many ladies is Bell going to attract? Freya seems to be on the move again. I thought she was going to cool off for a while so she wouldn’t arouse suspicion. I guess she’s either too strong to not worry or couldn’t care less. It was rather cute but very, very humorous when Hestia called Bell a cheater after she saw him holding hands with Lili.

I would have liked to have seen more of Aiz in action. It looks as though she’s going to take down a boss level creature with her fellow familiar buddy, Riveria.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Episode Three Thoughts

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon anime

This episode had everything. I thought it was both heart-warming and exciting. This episode covers the whole of chapter six from the first Light Novel of DanMachi.[1] I was really pleased with how this whole scenario was animated. I felt it was all completely spot on.

Did anyone else enjoy the way that Bell was carrying Hestia? I know I certainly did. It’s just like Hestia to forget the bigger picture. Haha.

Before I go on I need to ask myself… Is it me or did Aiz just smile? I thought there was dust in my eye but it turns out that what I saw wasn’t dust but Aiz’s smile. I think her smile is sweet and genuine. I didn’t picture her to be a smiling type, and I certainly don’t recall her smiling in the first LN[2] book. I thought she was going to be like Saber and Ayaka Kagari in which we would never see her smile. Yet, I can happily say that I have witnessed it in this episode.

I do wonder if they could have shown Freya in more scenes. In the book it showed her more sadistic side and how twisted her mind was. I especially would have liked to see that side of her but so far we’ve only seen glimpses of what she’s really like as a person, well, Goddess. It’s not too much of a big deal as I enjoyed this episode very much.

Bell’s growth is pretty cool, and I’m not just talking about his fighting abilities. Whilst he still lacks some confidence he didn’t just run away from that silverback, he sort of lured him away from Hestia so she could be safe. He probably did give up a little bit too easily but I just bear in mind that he’s only 15. Realistically most lads of that age would be cowardly in that situation.

I like the mechanics behind his new blade, the Hestia Knife. I think Hestia had to basically write her own symbols and attach pieces of her hair into that knife in order to make the knife work for Bell. If I recall correctly, they’re called hieroglyphs.

There were parts of the epilogue of the first LN book that were animated. They were shown in still picture frames and when Bell met Hestia for the first time. I really do hope we get an OVA or a special episode which concentrates on the epilogue because I really like it. =) I didn’t know that his Granddad was killed by an unidentified monster but I did get the impression by what Bell said to Hestia that his Granddad was dead.

The fight between Bell and that silverback was cool but I especially liked the ending part of the episode. I did gasp when Hestia fainted but I secretly knew it was because she was tired, so I probably wasn’t as worried as I should have been.

It was sweet when Syr whispered to Bell that she fell in love when he beat that monster and he heard that very clearly. I think Bell, unlike most blokes, does process those little hints but he probably doesn’t over-think them. Like the part from episode one when Hestia mentioned that she wouldn’t mind living alone with Bell. I think Bell took that on board but he probably didn’t read into what she said.

Then we have the part where Bell goes into Hestia’s room and has a nice one-to-one time. He got teary and hugged her. That was a really nice moment. I especially liked it when Hestia said that she loved him. That could have been interpreted either way. However I interpret it is irrelevant as Bell’s bond with Hestia is endearing.^^/

Hestia looked good in that alternative maid outfit. Does this mean that she’s going to work for Hephaistos now? Or, was she just playing dress up? I wonder who that “supporter” was. I recognise her but I don’t know who she is yet. I’m pretty sure I’ll find out more about her in the next episode. =)

OFF-TOPIC: MONSTER MUSUME NEWS

 Monster Musume TV

The voice cast has been announced for the Monster Musume anime. Judging by the current line-up so far, it looks like they’re going with a young cast.

Sora Amamiya is going to voice Miia. Her more well-known roles probably include Akame from Akame ga Kill, Kaori Fujimiya from One Week Friends and Elizabeth Liones from The Seven Deadly Sins. I heard her briefly voicing Kaori and she sounds like she has a sweet yet clear voice. Her singing vocals sound lovely too. I wish her great luck. =D

Ari Ozawa is going to play Papi. I’m particular excited about this role as Ari played Chiyo Sakura from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun as well as Millicas Gremory from High School DxD BorN. She portrayed Sakura as very sweet who can be very sensitive from time to time. She actually comes close to how I picture Papi’s voice to sound. I think she will be great. =)

Natsuki Aikawa is going to play the role of Cerea. She voiced Petra Ral from Attack on Titan. I quite liked Petra, she sounded like a good leader, brave, sincere and caring. I’m looking forward to hearing Natsuki voicing Cerea. =)

The producers will be Lerche and TOHO animation. I’m neutral about the staff announcements but I’m pleased that manzo is going to get involved in the music side. He was part of the music staff in the anime Is This a Zombie? and performed a duet for the ending song with Rie Yamaguchi. She performs the role as Taeko Hiramatsu in that same show.

Up until now I knew everything that was going to happen based on what I read from the Light Novel book one. I won’t have a clue what’s going to happen from episode four onwards.

However, my copy of the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? volume 2 should come within the next couple of days. If it comes before episode 4 airs then I could read the whole book two so I can keep on top. That and I just can’t wait to get my own copy. =)

Thanks for reading. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Episode Two Thoughts

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon anime

This was a great episode. =D This episode focuses on chapters 4 and 5 of the Light Novel.

Freya has finally made her appearance. Well, technically I guess it can be argued that she actually made her debut in episode one but you only see her eyes. She is a beauty but so far she is probably the prettiest anime lady that comes at the top of my dislike list. Haha. XD

I’m slightly gutted that the anime didn’t expand on the full conversation between Freya and Loki from the LN.[1] I really enjoyed their interaction as Aiz is just casually standing behind Loki. It can’t always be helped as sometimes it’s not possible to adapt every little thing that has happened from the original story. Eina’s scenes were omitted as well and I feel that her appearance was quite significant in the original story. However, in the scheme of things, they’re not the most important parts of the story so I can see why Eina’s part was cut from that scene.^^/

However, the scenes that were adapted were the ones that I wanted to see the most. I especially liked the part when Aiz is casually looking down at the crowd and then spotted Bell. They didn’t seem to show what Aiz was thinking, but that’s probably a good thing. It leaves me room to speculate what’s going through her mind, even though I have an idea of what she’s thinking. =D

Loki is funny to watch and is much more eccentric then I originally perceived her. I thought her reactions were funny, particularly when she was left to pay the bill at that dine place. Her squabble with Hestia was just as funny and I can’t decide who came out on top. I would say that it’s a draw as Loki beats Hestia in height and Hestia beats Loki in the bust department. Haha. I thought she was going to be evil with a name like Loki, but I was wrong. It’s just her eyes that look evil. Haha.

Syr is such a lovely girl and was impeccably cute when she was acting innocent in front of Bell. Bell wanted to refuse her lunchbox offer but he just couldn’t say no to her. She also told that Mia lass to forgive Bell. I don’t think Syr made a lunchbox for herself though. I think she actually made it for Bell and Bell alone. I’m glad things ended amicably in the end between Bell and the workers at the Mistress of Abundance. Mia even gave Bell some wisdom advice. I thought that was cool as she was acting like a Mum or Aunt. Something tells me that Bell is going to become a regular customer at that bar. 😉

I was most looking forward to the part where Hestia and Bell join in the festiveness of the MonsterPhillia. I originally pictured the scene being set at night as I assumed that it was going to be like a Japanese type festival. However, I think it was better that it was set in midday. Bell feeding Hestia a crepe was pretty cute, and he certainly went red in the face. Haha. Hestia looked jealous as soon as she learned that Bell is looking for a girl. Her jealous pouts are really cute to watch. It was especially funny when she was slapping his back after she was levelling him up. It was a nice moment when Bell promised her that he was never going to leave her.

It was very sweet of Hestia to go out of her own way and prostrating for days on ends for Bell’s sake. I think that prostrating pose is actually called “Dogeza.” That basically means you kneel down to appeal strongly for a favour or to strongly apologise for something.  If that is the correct term then it makes sense why Hestia was doing that. It seems that Hestia looks up to Hephaistos, and it isn’t because she’s small. Haha.

The ending was a tearjerker. Bell locked her up behind some random bars so they could protect her from that huge ape. If you look at it another way, it can also be a symbolism. That is the symbolism of not being able to do anything as she is trapped.  It’s really cool that Bell is going to take a stand and fight that big ape. It wouldn’t surprise me if that Silverback was stronger than the Minotaur that Bell encountered previously. As Hestia is his family and she’s a damsel in distress he was able to move despite feeling fear.

DanMachi is really good so far and I’m pleased with how it’s been animated. Roll on next week. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon Light Novel Volume One Review

Dungeon Girls Front Cover Light Novel Vol 1

This is the first time that I read a Light Novel without any indication as to what the story might be about. I just read the summary and ordered it via amazon. I decided to share my thoughts and how I visualised each scene. =)

PS, I apologise for the long title. As far as I’m aware there’s no abbreviation to this title so I felt that it was necessary to keep the title long for now. =)

  1. SYNOPSIS

Bell Cranel is among the adventurers that fight in the “Dungeon” which is an underground labyrinth that is part of a city called Orario. However, unlike most adventurers, Bell’s main goal is not fame or fortune, but to meet a bundle of pretty girls, thanks to the influence of his Grandfather. Will he be able to meet pretty girls or will he get eaten alive in the “Dungeon”….?

  1. REVIEW

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

Prologue

It’s quite short so I can’t really comment much on this. I understood that some lad has been saved by this super strong girl from a Minotaur. She’s called Aiz Wallenstein with golden eyes and hair. Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon, the boy asks… my personal opinion is… no, in the slightest.

Chapter One

By what I’ve gathered there’s this adventurer called Bell Cranel and his goal is to, well…go into dungeons to pick up cute girls. He was inspired to do this by his wonderful “Gramps.” It’s a bonus by going into dungeons as well as powering up.

Along the way he goes into these guilds to do commissions and often meets his good friend, Eina. I think she’s an elf who works as a receptionist?

He gets these power ups from his Goddess called Hestia. Gods like Hestia are from this place called “Tenkai” whilst normal humans like Bell are called “Genkai.” It seems like the Gods want to live alongside normal people as they become bored being “Gods”. They travelled down to Earth or Genkai and gathered “children” for their own Familiars.
I was a bit confused at first. At first I thought they were brother and sister but it turns out that Bell is part of Hestia’s familiar. Hestia has the power to “level” Bell “up”. Strangely, he has this unique ability of in which Hestia is keeping Bell in the dark of. I’m not really sure as to why this might be.

Chapter Two

There is a typical cliché moment right at the beginning when Bell wakes up. “Huh? What’s this on top of me?” He pulls the covers up and surprise, surprise a pretty girl was on top of him. It should get old but to me it’s always charming when it happens to different characters in different stories. I liked how Bell responded to try and move in the gentlest way so he didn’t wake Hestia up. For some reason I can see the anime milking this scene and making him jump like scared rabbit, no pun intended. I hope they keep this scene of where he gets out of his “predicament” in a calm manner as it’s a bit unusual for guys, in this type of story, to act this way. I wonder if Hestia often sleeps on top of him?

I got a little confused as to why Hestia became uptight and pouty towards Bell. I immediately put it down to her having a bad day all until she said “go have fun someplace else.” It made me think. I think when Hestia reads Bell’s levels on his back she can sort of see what he did during the day and week.

Not so long before Bell interacted on friendly terms with this Syr girl… this made me think that Hestia saw this and got jealous. It all started to make sense to me. There’s no denying that she likes him, but on what level? Family love? Or is it much more than that? This makes me wonder as well if she is jealous of this Aiz girl. The one who saved Bell.

A sad moment happened right at the end involving the Loki Familiar…I really like Aiz and in my opinion she’s in with the wrong Familiar. I knew she was a good person to begin with as she saved Bell. I hoped she wasn’t arrogant and this chapter confirmed that she isn’t… I do wonder if something could happen between her and Bell? She recognised him a little bit from his eyes and hair when he ran off. If she knew him quite well then that must mean he’s been in her mind. I anticipate that they’ll meet again by the end of this book.

I thought Bell was going to confront this arrogant man from the Loki Familiar. To me, I think he did the right thing to take himself out of the situation rather than start a fight. But, if it was me, I would have controlled my emotions better and pay attention to the pretty maid next to me but hey that’s just me. =D

Chapter Three

I enjoyed the fight between Bell and those… wall shadows. I couldn’t really picture the wall shadows very well. In my head I pictured them as pray mantis. Anyone know Schyfer from Pokemon? Schyfer is like a pray mantis. I sort of pictured the wall shadows like him but a dark version of him. I also replaced Schyfer’s head with the letter “V”. Haha.

I’ll be interested to see what they look like in the anime as I get the feeling that my imagination is totally off the mark. Haha.

Bell is getting a bit of a power up. Perhaps this is something to do with what Hestia saw on his back in Chapter One. Rapid Growth. Since he is dodging and defending a lot I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to get stronger.

Chapter Four

I’m really growing on Hestia. The picture I have of her in my head is becoming clearer and clearer. I find her to be really cute. Her clothes are cute too. By the way she acts, dresses and represents herself I do get the impression that she is the youngest out of all the gods. It’s incredibly sweet how she actually went to this God’s party for Bell’s benefit rather than have a good time. I decided that after Chapter Four, Hestia is my favourite character in the story.^^/

I can’t really make up my mind if she’s mature or childish. I’m under the impression that she’s a little bit of both. She is carefree and playful during the day but she’s mature when she needs to be, I.E., when Bell is in trouble. So, I deduce that Hestia acts in certain ways depending on the situation and who she is spending her time with.

By the way, Hestia’s name can also mean altar and fireplace. If I recall the dialogue correctly she and Bell live in the underground of the church near the altar part. I wonder if there’s a deliberate connection there. All the gods seem to have different names. Hestia is named after a Greek goddess whereas both Loki and Freya both not introduced yet at this point, stem from Norse mythology.

Chapter Five

The mistress, I noticed, is called Mamma Mia…I wonder if that’s a plain coincidence or if that’s a deliberate tribute to Abba’s song “Mamma Mia”? It’s a fun name regardless. =)

I’m really getting into this story. It’s getting really exciting. =D

Admittedly I thought all the Gods were going to be female, given the nature of this type of story. My assumptions were crushed upon the introduction of Miach. He appears to be in a similar situation to Hestia as he works as well. Good for him.

Hestia was sweet to spend all that time kneeling for 2 days running just so Hephaistos could build a weapon for Bell. That was certainly a cool moment. I think there’s a fancy word that she used for it but for now let’s call it a prostrating position. =) It was especially sweet how she decided to enjoy the festival now that she was in the same atmosphere as Bell. It was full of cliché moments, especially when Hestia tried to feed Bell. Instead, Bell fed Hestia. Goddess or not I think being fed by a beautiful girl is always a plus point in my book. 😉

I think it’s pretty much confirmed by now that Hestia is pretty smitten with Bell. Who comes up with the name “Love Dagger” with no romantic intentions? She got jealous and suspicious of Aiz, Syr and Eina the receptionist, mostly for no reason as she read into it. I was suspicious but now my thoughts are confirmed. =)

I liked Bell’s explanation on the map of Orario… He lives in the North East part of Orario. However… when he described Orario in like a pie chart way I immediately pictured the city as a pizza with mushroom toppings divided into eight pieces…it’s incredibly silly, I know, but that just goes to show how crazy- ahem- imaginative my mind is. Haha. Now I’m picturing Bell living in the North East Pizza with thick crusts.

I didn’t expect for Freya to have eyes for Bell, or at least not so soon. I think if Freya would go after Bell, it would happen in the future books rather than in the first volume. I knew she was a mischievous type of character. She has a very fearsome yet appropriate ability. An ability which can charm anyone or any beast.

It will be interesting to see how Bell and Hestia get out of this pickle. Or pizza…

Chapter Six

So…Bell and Hestia proceed to run from this big ape. Like a true hero he protected Hestia with all his might. Naturally, for most young newbies, he gets scared of the beast. But, I feel that he’s able to fight because he’s thinking about protecting Hestia rather than protecting himself.

It was quite a teary chapter, for me. He left her so she wouldn’t get hurt. To Bell, the familiar is more than a group of adventurers and a God, Hestia is part of his family.

It was clever of Hestia to upgrade Bell’s level just in time. Likewise, the “Hestia Knife” also upgraded along with its user. It was clever how Hephaistos did this, but it did require Hestia’s hair. Credit to Hephaistos for doing a stand up job, even if Bell wasn’t a part of her familiar. I get the impression that Bell is going to get mega strong since slaying that silverback. When Hestia checks his level next time I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s borderline level two.

I can’t work out Aiz’s feelings for Bell as she is the silent and cool type. I also get the impression that she’s very awkward with socialising, choosing to let her action and kickass fighting abilities speak for her.

It’s clear that he is in her mind and she reacts whenever he’s around or is talked about. However, her relationship and feelings for Bell are not so clear. Perhaps she’s known him longer then he’s known her but we don’t know that yet? Was it really just a coincidence that she saved him from that Minotaur? I’m slightly gutted that they didn’t get their reunion as I thought they would. I’m certain that they will cross paths again as she owns him an “apology” and he owns her a “confession”. Hoho.

The ending was so lovely and heart-warming when they embraced. Hestia proclaims her love for him which I thought was very sweet. Whether Bell took it in a romantic way or a platonic way doesn’t matter as he knows that Hestia likes him. And being liked by someone you like, in all levels, is certainly a nice thing. =) Unless, of course, you have Freya stalking you… if I was Bell I’d either get out of the country or request a restraining order. 😉

Epilogue

That was a really nice epilogue. In some ways, I wonder if this should have been a prequel, since this little tale is about how Bell and Hestia first met.

Strangely, I did picture their encounter in this exact way but this was a much better encounter then the one I had pictured in my head.

Bell couldn’t get into a Familiar and Hestia couldn’t find any adventurers but they eventually found each other. It was a really nice metaphor set-up in this part. A new story begins in a room full of stories and books. I think this was clearly a love at first site in Hestia’s case.

  1. CONCLUSION

Conclusion… I really, really like this. In fact, I actually stayed up until the early hours of the morning because I was eager to see how this book ended.

It was probably a little slow at the beginning as this is the first time that I actually read a Light Novel of a franchise before reading the Manga or watching the Anime. The style and language was a little tough for me to grasp and visualise, and if I read the manga first then I probably would have grasped the concept of this story quicker. I think I got used to the writing style by Chapter 3 as I was able to visualise the scenes in my head.

I really got into it by the end of Chapter 4 and beginning of Chapter 5. I got the impression straightaway that Hestia had a deep affection for Bell. Sometimes I couldn’t really picture the scenes properly in my head. They were plenty of cliché moments which are part of the anime charm like festivals, and the girl pulling the guy along in excitement.

At this point I can’t really remember most of the terms used in this book. I think the gods like Hestia use these Hieroglyphs when they level up their children like Hestia does with Bell. However, instead of trying to remember the terms I just sort of look at the bigger picture and enjoy the story. I’ll probably be able to remember all these references and names of places when I read more of the Light Novels or when I probably re-read this book.

I really like Bell and Hestia’s relationship, and it’s even confirmed to me that she has feelings for him. Bell likes all the girls but at this point I think he sees most of them as friends. I wonder how this story will turn out. Will Bell possibly go down Issei Hyoudou’s route and have a harem or will he chose go with one girl in the end?

I would do my research on these references but I’m very determined not to be spoiled. I was often spoiled by what happened in future events of different anime, like High School DxD, Haganai, Is This a Zombie? andStrike the Blood. As this is the first time that I have read a Light Novel with no prior knowledge I’m resisting the urge to do any research, in case I am spoiled. =)

Two Thumb’s-Up. ^^/ (My Rating System)

This book has put some things into perspectives, especially the writing style. I was slow reading it a first but I got more enthusiastic as I read more of it. I’m certainly looking forward to reading Volume Two when it’s released. =)
